Zach Cregger, the director of ‘Weapons’ which premieres on HBO Max this Friday, October 24th, is already thinking ahead. He’s expressed his wish for the upcoming Aunt Gladys prequel movie as it moves into development.
Weapons is widely considered one of the year’s best horror films, and even a standout in the genre overall. It masterfully combines a disturbing mystery with both dark humor and supernatural elements. As we noted in our five-star review, the movie is deeply unsettling and builds tension brilliantly, culminating in a surprisingly thrilling climax.
It’s clear the movie was a hit with both critics and audiences. With scores of 93% from critics and 88% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, Weapons grossed over $267 million worldwide on a budget of just $38 million.
I’m so excited to hear that the director wants to do a prequel about Aunt Gladys! She was definitely the best part of the movie – everyone’s obsessed with her, and it makes total sense he’d want to explore her story more. She’s become a real pop culture moment!
Weapons director makes promise about Aunty Gladys prequel
In a recent interview with The Wrap, Cregger mentioned he worried making a prequel about Gladys could reveal too much and lessen the intrigue around the character Weapons.
He also emphasized that he wants the new film to be successful based on its own merits, not just because the first film was popular.
I’ve considered it, but I believe the story of Gladys is compelling enough to work as a standalone piece and won’t take away from the impact of ‘Weapons,’ he explained.
The film reveals each character’s background through individual chapters, gradually unfolding the central mystery. Director Zach Cregger mentioned he initially wrote a chapter focusing on the character Gladys, but removed it to keep the movie at a reasonable length.
The upcoming prequel will connect to previous stories, but the director also wants it to stand on its own. Beyond this goal for the Gladys film, Cregger also has another idea related to the ‘Weapons’ series.
He said it was incredibly exciting to see Amy and learn about everything that’s been happening. He also expressed hope that there are many more people like ‘Halloween Gladyses’ out there.
Is there an Aunt Gladys prequel release date?
We don’t have a release date for the Aunt Gladys prequel yet, as it’s still in the very beginning stages of development. The game ‘Weapons’ was initially announced in January 2023 and launched in August 2025, though production was likely delayed by the recent Hollywood strikes.
Because the first movie did so well, Warner Bros. will probably move quickly to start the next one. Just be aware that it’s confirmed – a new film is in the works.
Director John Cregger recently confirmed to Fangoria that a sequel is in development. He stated he’s been discussing the project with Warner Bros. and that a story is already taking shape. He assured fans it’s not just talk and that he’s genuinely enthusiastic about it.
