A California town has outlawed Pickleball due to noise complaints, with residents playing the game around the clock.
Pickleball has become incredibly popular recently, gaining fans worldwide and even launching professional leagues in both Europe and the United States. You can now find pickleball courts popping up in parks and recreation areas everywhere, often alongside tennis courts.
Pickleball players in Carmel City, California, will need to find a new place to play. The city council recently voted to prohibit pickleball at Forest Hills Park, paving the way for a permanent rule change, according to reports from SFGate and the New York Post.
So, I heard the city council was trying to deal with the noise from pickleball. First, they suggested we all use quieter balls and paddles, but apparently, that didn’t really fix the problem with the popping sound. Now, they’ve actually temporarily banned pickleball altogether! It’s a bit of a bummer, but I guess they’re serious about trying to reduce the noise complaints.
Pickleball ban brings “quiet”
People who live nearby said they appreciated the peace and quiet the temporary ban on Pickleball brought. They worry that even with quieter rules, bringing the game back will still cause disturbances.
Kimberly Edwards, a Carmel resident, questioned the city council about how the new rules would be enforced. She pointed out that these aren’t courts with dedicated staff like a parks and recreation department to oversee compliance, a point she had also made in a letter to the council.
City Councillor Alissandra Dramov believes they’re making the situation more difficult by trying to find a solution that pleases everyone. She stated that people need to recognize this isn’t a suitable place for pickleball.

As a big pickleball fan, I was really hoping the council would listen to the pros who asked them to stick with the quieter pickleball rules. Unfortunately, the ban is still on for now, which is a real bummer for all of us who love the game.
According to SFGate, players will get two opportunities to voice their concerns about the new rules, but only after a permanent ban has already been overturned.
