James Cameron, known for the Terminator movies, has discussed the challenges that come with new technology, particularly artificial intelligence. While he’s not against AI, he chooses not to incorporate it into his own films. He believes the film industry will eventually establish guidelines for its use.
James Cameron will not use AI
James Cameron’s Avatar films are known for their incredible visuals. He’s currently working on a third movie, and while artificial intelligence is becoming more common in filmmaking, he won’t be using it in this project. He explained this decision is primarily to protect the work and rights of the actors.
I’m not against generative AI; I simply want to clarify that we don’t use it in the Avatar films. We value and respect actors and have no intention of replacing them. I believe Hollywood will ultimately regulate itself in this area and find a balance. However, my biggest concern isn’t the use of AI for creative effects, but rather the broader, more fundamental threat that large-scale AI poses to artists and their livelihoods. We need to ensure artists can continue to exist and create.
James Cameron seems genuinely worried about the possibility of Artificial General Intelligence – AI that has its own consciousness. He’s drawn parallels to Skynet from the Terminator films and has explained his concerns. He points out that while people say AI should benefit humanity, it’s difficult to define what ‘benefit’ even means when we humans can’t agree on much.
It’s unclear who gets to decide what’s right or best for everyone. We can’t even agree as a society, with religions clashing on values and governments pursuing different priorities. Ultimately, whose standards should we follow?
Cameron believes we’re living in a highly divisive era where it’s difficult to find common ground. The spread of false information is contributing to this, and at the same time, companies are heavily investing in the development of advanced artificial intelligence.
