Waymo taxi terrifies passengers after running red light

A Waymo self-driving taxi ran a red light, frightening the passengers and likely discouraging them from using the service again soon.

Driverless taxis are becoming more common in cities across the U.S. Companies like Tesla, with its Robotaxi, Amazon’s Zoox in Las Vegas, and Waymo are all testing or expanding their services, moving from the West Coast to the East Coast.

Despite their advanced technology, all three companies have experienced problems, particularly with obeying traffic rules. Waymo vehicles have received speeding tickets and made incorrect turns, and Robotaxis have sometimes left passengers stranded in dangerous traffic situations.

Because Waymo is a larger service, there have been more concerning reports about it compared to its competitors, such as instances of taxis running red lights.

Waymo runs red light on TikTok

Mikayla Petrilla, a cast member on Saturday Night Live, shared a TikTok video on October 16th showing her Waymo vehicle running a red light.

In the brief video, the actress asks the car, “Are you going to go?” as they near a yellow light. But the car doesn’t stop and drives through the intersection even after the light turns red.

“You ran a red light!” the woman exclaimed in the video, which has now been viewed about a million times. Many people commenting on the video said they were now afraid to drive similarly. One commenter joked that a human driver would have avoided the situation, while another stated they simply don’t trust self-driving cars.

Several people questioned whether the Waymo car ran a yellow light, believing it should have stopped. One person stated the light was “at the tail end of yellow” and Waymo “absolutely should’ve stopped.” Another commenter added that the car entered the intersection before the light turned red and wouldn’t have been able to stop in time.

On October 25th, Petrilla shared a video showing a Waymo vehicle driving in New York City while she was walking nearby.

“No, no, no, no, no, no,” she said
