When Fifty Shades of Grey became widely known, it faced criticism for portraying unhealthy relationships as romantic, its inaccurate depiction of BDSM, and, surprisingly, its beginnings as Twilight fan fiction. Even after significant revisions, many readers still saw similarities between the main characters, Anastasia Steele and Bella Swan. Nevertheless, the Fifty Shades trilogy was made into movies, launching the careers of Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. Though the Fifty Shades of Grey films were divisive, they demonstrated that everyone and everything has a starting point, even if it’s an online writing platform like Wattpad.
Wattpad is known for its fan fiction, but it also features original stories, particularly in the romance genre. Interestingly, some of these original stories have been developed into popular movies and TV shows. Adapting stories from books to the screen isn’t new – it’s been happening for years. Since many Wattpad stories are already developed into published novels, it’s natural that they’re now being adapted for film and television as well. Here’s a look at some Wattpad books and stories that have made the jump to the screen.

The Tearsmith really captured a dark and romantic style, reminding some viewers of the popular teen romance film, Twilight. The story features two siblings who are rivals but eventually fall in love – a common theme in fan fiction – brought to life by Simone Baldasseroni and Caterina Ferioli. While it’s not perfect, The Tearsmith proves that stories from around the world, like this one originally from Italy, can gain international recognition and be made into a movie or show.
