Washington Post Veteran Philip Rucker Joins CNN

Philip Rucker, once a rising star at The Washington Post and now its national editor, has decided to move to CNN for a prominent position where he will oversee their political news coverage centered around our country’s capital.

Effective from February 10th, Rucker assumes the position of Senior Vice President for Editorial Strategy and News, taking charge of various responsibilities including directing news coverage related to President Donald Trump who was sworn into office on Monday.

He is the latest high-profile journalist to leave The Washington Post, which has been experiencing a decrease in subscriptions and facing resistance to its recent stances under CEO Will Lewis and owner Jeff Bezos. In late October, the Post announced that it would not endorse any presidential candidate, a decision that some subscribers perceived as a concession to the newly-elected president Donald Trump by the newspaper’s proprietor. Other notable employees have recently departed to join publications such as The Atlantic, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal.

For over a decade, Rucker has been a recognized figure on various TV news networks such as MSNBC. In his role at The Washington Post, he managed a team of 150 journalists, supervising the reporting on various topics like the White House, Congress, politics, national security, criminal justice, the Supreme Court, domestic U.S. news, health, education, science, race issues, immigration, and more. Beyond this, he held positions as a deputy national editor, senior Washington correspondent, and White House bureau chief. Rucker initially joined The Post in 2005, where he began his career as a local news reporter, since then covering Congress, the Obama Administration, and multiple presidential campaigns including those of 2012, 2016, and 2020.

As a film enthusiast, I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with Carol Leonnig on two critically acclaimed books: “A Very Stable Genius: Donald J. Trump’s Challenge to America,” published in 2020, and “I Alone Can Fix It: Donald J. Trump’s Pivotal Final Year” released in 2021. I earned my history degree from the esteemed Yale University.
