The Resident Evil series is well-known for being incredibly frightening. What scares people varies, though. Personally, I felt quite nauseous while playing Village when I discovered what was hidden in the basement of Beneviento House. It was truly disturbing.
Resident Evil Requiem will certainly follow suit. In fact, it could very well be the most frightening game in the entire series. Thankfully, the ability to switch between first-person and third-person perspectives gives players a small respite from the horrors Capcom has prepared.
It’s curious that the developers are unsure how frightening Resident Evil 9 will be. After spending years creating survival horror games, they’ve likely become accustomed to the genre, making it difficult to assess their own work objectively. Therefore, they need feedback from others. This information came from Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi during an interview with IGN.
We’ve created so many Resident Evil games now that it’s hard for us to judge them ourselves – we need outside opinions. Before showing the hands-off demo of RE: Requiem at SGF and letting people play it at Gamescom, we were genuinely concerned: was it actually frightening? Because we weren’t sure anymore. This series is our core business, what we work on constantly.
That’s why Capcom generally avoids cutting scenes from their games simply because they’re frightening. However, Nakanishi shared that while developing Resident Evil 9, the team briefly considered a scenario where Grace Ashcroft-likely one of the two main characters, alongside Leon Kennedy-would suffer a severe leg injury, potentially leading to amputation.
In the end, they chose not to pursue this concept. It likely seemed like it would negatively impact gameplay, making the character harder to control (and requiring changes that would be costly and time-consuming for the developers to implement). Another reason they might have dropped the idea is because a comparable element appeared in the seventh and eighth Resident Evil installments-though in those games, Ethan Winters only lost a hand.
In the end, Nakanishi believes that regarding how frightening it is, Requiem will be similar to the second game, which is a positive sign. If you’re unsure, I suggest checking out the trailer from the recent Nintendo Direct.

Resident Evil 9 is scheduled to launch on February 27, 2025, and will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the Nintendo Switch 2. Based on the computer specifications used to showcase the game’s demo at Tokyo Game Show 2025, we can get a good sense of how demanding the game will be for PC players.
