Warner Bros. Confirms New The Lord of the Rings Movie After The Hunt for Gollum

I’m hearing rumors Warner Bros. might be bought by Paramount, but even with all that going on, they’re still focused on their big properties. After getting a first glimpse of the new Harry Potter TV series, they’ve now confirmed they have even more planned beyond the initial story of The Hunt for Gollum. It’s exciting to see them continuing with the Wizarding World!

In celebration of Tolkien Reading Day on March 25th, the studio announced a new film project with an unexpected team. Talk show host Stephen Colbert and his son, Peter McGee (a screenwriter), are collaborating on the movie, following their previous work on ‘The Hunt for Gollum’.

What’s the New The Lord of the Rings Movie About?

Peter Jackson revealed the new film, The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, through social media, announcing it during a video call with Stephen Colbert and a “very special partner.” The movie is set 14 years after Frodo’s death.

The movie follows Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they revisit the start of their original journey. At the same time, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, uncovers an old secret and tries to find out how close the War of the Ring came to being lost right from the beginning.

Colbert explained to Peter Jackson that while he loves both the books and the films, he kept rereading the first six chapters of The Fellowship of the Ring – the part of the story that wasn’t fully used in the first movie.

Colbert described the project as covering chapters three through eight of the book – essentially, the section from ‘Three is Company’ to ‘Fog on the Barrow-Downs.’ He wondered if this portion could stand alone as its own story, while still staying true to both the original book and the existing films. His goal was to create something faithful to all versions of the tale.

The Hunt for Gollum Received an Update

Jackson started the video by sharing an update on Hunt for Gollum. He explained that Andy Serkis has been actively involved in all aspects of the film – designing it, directing it, and, of course, performing as Gollum.

As a longtime fan, I’m excited to hear that a lot of the original crew is back for the next installment, and they’re adding some fresh talent too. I recently spoke with someone involved, and they raved about Andy’s work, saying it’s looking fantastic. They also confirmed the script is really shaping up nicely, and honestly, they seem confident we’re in for a truly great movie. It sounds like they’re on the right track to deliver something special.

The cast isn’t fully finalized yet, and will feature both returning favorites and new actors. While it’s anticipated that Sir Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood will return as Gandalf and Frodo, that hasn’t been officially confirmed.

Viggo Mortensen, who previously played the role, is being replaced. Liv Tyler, who played his love interest Arwen, daughter of Elrond, will also be recast. Anya Taylor-Joy is reportedly joining the cast for the next installment.

The Hunt for Gollum hits theaters on Dec. 17, 2027.
