As a seasoned gamer who vividly remembers the thrill of those Warcraft Battle Chests from my childhood, I can’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia with Blizzard’s announcement. The remastered versions of Warcraft: Orcs and Humans and Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness bring back memories of countless hours spent strategizing and battling it out in the digital realm.
To mark the 30th anniversary of the franchise, Blizzard is giving the classic RTS games Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, and Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness a “remastered” makeover. These games can now be purchased individually or as a bundle with Warcraft 3: Reforged in a new collection called Warcraft Battle Chest.
The announcement arrives during Blizzard’s Warcraft 30th Anniversary Direct event, where the developer began by honoring the games that initiated the series and discussing updates for Warcraft 1 and 2 Remastered. Players will be able to switch between original graphics (which can be toggled on or off) and remastered versions featuring new, hand-drawn visuals that enhance the clarity of each game’s units while preserving their classic aesthetic.
In simpler terms, the controls for Warcraft 1 have been modernized to include common features in Real-Time Strategy (RTS) games such as clicking right to move units, selecting multiple units at once, and a quicker game pace. Both games now come with interface and user experience improvements too, including visible health bars for units, helpful tips, larger unit selection, and the ability to choose missions. Warcraft 2 will continue to support multiplayer and all older custom maps will work seamlessly in this updated version of the game.
2020 saw the launch of Warcraft 3: Reforged, a remaster that received a barrage of unfavorable reviews due to budget cuts and development challenges. However, today it’s getting a significant 2.0 update! This overhaul enhances the game’s environments, lighting, and user interface, offering hotkey customization and an upgraded ladder system for competitive play. For those who still crave the classic Warcraft 3 look, this update brings high-resolution versions of all original models. You now have the freedom to pick and choose which assets from the past or present you’d like to use in your gaming experience!
Individuals who spent their childhood gaming on Blizzard’s iconic Warcraft series might recall the towering Battle Chests stocked in game stores, each containing several games or expansions under one roof. For the first time since then, a fresh Battle Chest has surfaced, offering remastered editions of all three Real-Time Strategy (RTS) Warcraft titles as a package deal. The Battle Chest is priced at $40, while individual remastered versions of Warcraft: Remastered and Warcraft 2: Remastered will be available for $10 and $15 each.
If you prefer the classic experience without the additional features in the remastered editions, you can get both the original Warcraft 1 and 2 in a single package on GOG for just $15.
