‘War Machine’ Ending, Explained

Spoilers for War Machine are below!

Alan Ritchson, famous for his role as Jack Reacher, is back as a strong military character in his new Netflix action film. Called War Machine, the movie is directed by Patrick Hughes (known for The Hitman’s Bodyguard) and stars Ritchson alongside Dennis Quaid, Esai Morales, and Jai Courtney. The plot centers around highly trained Army Ranger recruits who must fight for their lives when an alien robot lands on Earth, delivering a sci-fi action experience full of intense violence for Netflix subscribers.

The film begins with Ritchson’s character, known as 81, assisting his brother’s military convoy. His brother encourages him to join the challenging Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP), but their conversation is cut short by an attack that leaves 81 wounded and his brother killed. Driven by grief and a desire to honor his brother’s memory, 81 enlists in RASP, where recruits are only referred to by numbers. The final training exercise takes a shocking turn when the recruits encounter an alien robot that has crashed to Earth. A comet seen earlier in the movie is revealed to be connected to this threat, putting 81 and his fellow recruits at a significant disadvantage.

How Does 81 Finally Stop the Alien Robot?

Netflix

Throughout most of War Machine, the recruits are desperately trying to escape a relentless alien robot. Because they were just on a training exercise when the attack began, they didn’t have any weapons to defend themselves. The movie follows Ritchson and his team as they race to outrun the robot across difficult landscapes, with many of them falling victim to its brutal attacks in a non-stop barrage of action. They eventually find some hope when they discover an armored vehicle with a powerful machine gun, which allows them to slow the robot down and gives one of them, known as 81, a chance to identify its vulnerable spot. Despite being heavily outmatched, the recruits realize this alien machine isn’t indestructible—it has an exhaust port that can be exploited.

The beginning of the movie War Machine is important because it shows a vehicle disabled by a blocked exhaust. This detail sparks a memory for the character 81, helping him connect it to the robot. He also spots a construction site nearby and decides to make his last stand there. At this point in the film, the robot has killed all the new recruits except for 81 and 7, the badly wounded recruit 81 has been desperately trying to save.

81 tricks the robot into following him to a construction site, then uses a large front-end loader to smash it against a rock wall. With the robot trapped, 81 dumps rubble into its air vents using a conveyor belt. Even with blocked vents, the robot continues to fight, but 81 finally disables it. However, he has to escape quickly when grenades fall from the damaged robot, causing a huge explosion that completely destroys the alien threat.

The Invasion Is Just Beginning

Netflix

Ritchson’s character, 81, is fiercely determined to finish RASP training, no matter the cost. The show reveals this drive stems from a tragic past: he carried his injured brother for miles, collapsing just short of safety, and his brother subsequently died. Driven by grief and a desire to honor his brother’s memory, 81 is committed to completing RASP. This explains his unwavering loyalty to James’ character, as seen in a powerful moment where 81 carries him across the finish line. Meanwhile, the training base is descending into chaos, with everyone preparing for an impending conflict.

As War Machine nears its end, 81 returns to his commanding officer, Quaid, who reveals the world is under attack by alien robots. 81 only defeated one of potentially thousands, but the information he gathered about how to stop them is incredibly useful. He shares this intelligence with troops worldwide. He also receives his Army Ranger badge, earning it through his successful fight against the alien robot and exceeding all training expectations.

The Robot Isn’t the Only ‘War Machine’

The title War Machine immediately brings to mind the film’s central conflict – soldiers battling a massive robot. However, the name also represents something more profound. Even before we learn the full story of soldier 81, the reactions of his fellow trainees reveal that his past is significant and well-known. He’s become a legend among the recruits due to what he’s overcome. Throughout his grueling training, 81 relentlessly pushes himself to the limit, and this unwavering determination ultimately defines his fight against the alien robot.

Though the soldiers mostly focused on simply staying alive, 81 consistently took the lead. He was always the driving force, making plans and keeping everyone moving forward. By the end of the film, the story of how 81 single-handedly defeated the robot began to circulate among the troops, becoming another legendary story. Despite being injured from the battle, 81 rallied his fellow soldiers before boarding a helicopter with them to head to their next fight against the alien robots. The movie then shows 81 finally getting some much-needed rest while two soldiers talk about his incredible accomplishments, emphasizing just how remarkable he was. The film ends with a close-up of Ritchson’s face as the title ‘War Machine’ appears, solidifying 81’s identity.
