Justified is a consistently excellent show, though many fans agree its second season was its peak. The series is widely considered the best Neo-Western ever made on television, and it finally provided Timothy Olyphant with the breakout role he’d long deserved.
The TV show based on Elmore Leonard’s work lasted six seasons and was later revived as a limited series called City Primival. Whether the show will return after the cliffhanger ending of Justified: City Primival remains to be seen, but it’s already considered a classic. The first season had some uneven moments, but the show really hit its stride starting with the second season.
Justified Never Beat The Greatness Of Its Second Season
The first season of Justified felt like a classic Western with a new crime solved each week, which was a good beginning. However, the show really hit its stride in season 2. It successfully balanced the overarching story with the development of its characters, especially Raylan, and his connections with Boyd, his coworkers, and family.
As a big fan of Justified, I think season two really shines because of the villains – the Bennett family is easily the best the show has offered. Margo Martindale is incredible as Mags, the family’s mastermind; she totally deserved all the awards she got! And it’s where I first noticed Kaitlyn Dever – she was amazing as Loretta, a young woman caught up in the Bennett’s dangerous drug business after a terrible tragedy.
The second season is excellent in every way. The writing is top-notch, the supporting cast is incredible, and the story keeps you hooked from beginning to end. Future seasons of Justified would try to replicate what made this season so good, but they never quite captured the same magic.
Justified Was Still An Excellent Show Throughout Its Run
It’s important to note that recognizing series 2 as exceptional doesn’t diminish the quality of the other seasons. Even though some viewers found City Primeval didn’t feel connected to the original series and were a bit disappointed, it was still enjoyable to see Raylan return, and the season was based on one of Elmore Leonard’s finest novels.
The show remained excellent throughout seasons 3 to 6, with great additions to the cast like Sam Elliott, Mykelti Williamson, and Mary Steenburgen. The clever writing stayed consistently strong, and the series became noticeably more intense, particularly in the last season as Boyd Crowder, played by Walton Goggins, grew increasingly desperate and paranoid.
Justified Still Needs One Final Season
The finale of Justified wrapped up beautifully, with Raylan and Boyd, despite being longtime rivals, recognizing their connection during a prison visit. While it felt like a fitting end, the final moments of City Primival took an unexpected turn: Boyd broke out of prison, and Raylan, who had seemingly retired, was forced to decide between his sense of duty and his family.
Timothy Olyphant and the cast are interested in continuing Justified, but there haven’t been any new developments regarding a sequel to City Primeval since 2023. This is a little worrying, as it would be disappointing to end the story with unanswered questions.
