Walter Koenig recently criticized how a female guest star was portrayed in a classic episode of Star Trek: The Original Series. He discussed the season 2 episode, “A Private Little War,” on the The 7th Rule podcast, co-hosted by Cirroc Lofton and Ryan T. Husk, pointing out the performance felt overly sexualized.
The Star Trek episode “A Private Little War” is often remembered for featuring the Mugato, a white, ape-like alien that attacked Captain Kirk on the planet Neural. Kirk was cured of the Mugato’s venom through a unique healing process, described as “orgasmic therapy,” administered by Nona, a woman with mystical abilities from the planet’s native Hill people.
In a recent discussion on The 7th Rule, Walter Koenig shared his thoughts on the Star Trek episode “A Private Little War,” specifically criticizing what he saw as overly exaggerated sexuality in Nancy Kovack’s portrayal of Nona. However, Koenig believes the responsibility for this lies with the director, Marc Daniels, who didn’t guide Kovack towards a more nuanced performance. You can read Walter’s exact words below:
Okay, so I have really mixed feelings about this show, honestly. [laughs] It’s the only time I’ve ever felt like something was… well, let’s just say it was a really intense experience! Nancy Kovack is gorgeous, truly, but some of the choices felt…off. I really think the director should have stepped in. I actually worked on episodes directed by Marc Daniels, but he never really gave me any feedback. And in this case, I feel like some direction was desperately needed.
The performance was incredibly sensual and direct – there was no subtlety to it. The actress is stunningly beautiful, but her approach lacked nuance. I thought casting someone like Shelly Long could have been interesting, playing against her typical image and avoiding constant overt sexuality. This actress, however, has a captivating innocence combined with a powerful, passionate side. That contrast – looking innocent while being incredibly sensual – is what made it so compelling.
I understand why she acted as she did, and I don’t fault Nancy Kovack for it. She needed better direction – someone should have advised her to do the opposite of what was expected.

Walter Koenig reflects that he now views Nancy Kovack’s performance in season 2 of Star Trek: The Original Series differently than he would have in the past. He, along with Cirroc Lofton and Ryan T. Husk, also notes that the character of Nona clearly reflects the creative preferences of Gene Roddenberry, who penned the script for the episode “A Private Little War.”
In The 7th Rule, the authors explore the themes of the Star Trek episode “A Private Little War,” recognizing it as a commentary on the Vietnam War. They connect the episode’s messages to current conflicts, like the war in Ukraine, demonstrating that even though the portrayal of the character Nona feels outdated, the 1968 episode still holds meaning today.
The episode “A Private Little War” marks the first appearance of Dr. M’Benga (played by Booker Bradshaw), a Vulcan doctor specializing in medicine and responsible for treating Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy). The episode focuses on M’Benga, Nurse Christine Chapel (Majel Barrett Roddenberry), and Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley) as they work together to save Spock’s life.
I’m so excited for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds! It looks like by the end of season five, we’re finally going to see the full crew of the Enterprise come together – including Dr. McCoy, who’s going to be played by Thomas Jane. The big question now is whether we’ll also see a young Pavel Chekov show up to complete the original crew we all know and love!
