Walmart is trying out sushi bars in some of its stores to improve the overall grocery shopping experience for customers.
The new Supercenter in Jacksonville, Florida, features a fresh sushi bar and represents the retailer’s latest store design. This design emphasizes a wider selection of food and modern in-store improvements.
The Walmart in Jacksonville is a test store for upcoming changes to other locations, demonstrating the company’s shift in grocery shopping beyond simply picking up items quickly.
Walmart adds sushi bar to next-generation stores
The Supercenter has a new look and now offers a wider selection of groceries, with additions like a bakery, deli, and a fresh sushi bar.
Walmart is updating its stores with features designed to make shopping simpler, faster, and more engaging. These include digital screens and displays throughout the store, plus a wider selection of products like trendy clothing brands and a larger grocery section with a bakery, deli, and fresh sushi.
This change puts Walmart in more direct competition with local grocery stores known for their fresh, ready-to-eat meals.
According to John Clear, a partner at AlixPartners, regional grocery stores have an edge over larger retailers like Walmart, Target, and Costco when it comes to fresh, prepared foods. Because they aren’t always competing on price, these smaller grocers can prioritize offering higher-quality options.
You can find pre-made sushi at Walmart in two ways: through the “Hissho on the Go” selection in the deli, and as part of the “Marketside” brand, both in stores and on their website.
Walmart is also adding more fresh food options like hot bars and convenient grab-and-go sections with items such as chicken strips and rotisserie chicken.
Sam’s Club now offers sushi at many of its stores under its Member’s Mark brand, allowing customers to find it beyond the regular grocery sections.
