Amongst the numerous movies competing for accolades during this year’s award season, none quite matches the excitement as the comeback of not only one renowned cinematic pair, but also a notorious movie villain I eagerly anticipate seeing again on the big screen.
Wallace & Gromit: Revenge of the Feathered Men” has been longlisted in various BAFTA categories, including Best British Film, Children’s and Family Film, and Animated Film. It is anticipated to compete for the Animated Feature Oscar as well. This movie marks the return of Aardman’s stop-motion animation characters since the 2008 short film “A Matter of Loaf and Death” (and their first feature film since the 2005 Academy Award-winning “The Curse of the Were-Rabbit”).
Revenge of the Feathered Men” is a new movie from Aardman’s stop-motion animation series, and it has been nominated for several awards. It’s been a while since the last film in this series was released, with the last short film being “A Matter of Loaf and Death” in 2008 and the last feature being “The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” in 2005.
The return of Nick Park’s iconic inventor and his canine companion in “Vengeance Most Fowl” is a source of great excitement. This movie also reintroduces Feathers McGraw, the cunning penguin diamond thief who was imprisoned at the end of the 2003 Oscar-winning film “The Wrong Trousers.” Feathers’ train chase scene, considered one of the greatest — both animated and not — in cinematic history, is among his most memorable moments.
Although Feathers hadn’t initially crossed Park’s mind when it came to planning the latest Wallace & Gromit project with Merlin Crossingham, his longstanding affection for the character has remained unchanged throughout the years, and eventually led him to reintroduce Feathers in the storyline.
He has not typically been drawn to resurrecting characters within Wallace & Gromit movies; instead, it was a suitable chance that presented itself,” he explains from Aardman’s primary studio located in the city of Bristol in the UK. “The idea had been suggested before, but it hadn’t been something seriously considered.
The moment came during the writing phase (when Park collaborated on the story with Aardman’s usual screenwriter, Mark Burton), as they recognized a need for “some darkness” in a tale about misbehaving garden gnomes, that the inspired thought arose. It was as if a bolt of lightning had struck… Could it be feathers causing all this chaos?!
Although Feathers may not be the most expressive character in “Vengeance Most Fowl,” according to Park, the task of animating him proved to be the most difficult aspect of the movie’s production.
Maintaining an understated demeanor, avoiding expressiveness and preserving the enigma in his gaze – it’s quite an accomplishment due to the significance placed on restraint and minimalism. This subtlety is what makes him strong.”
Or simply:
“By keeping a reserved expression and maintaining an air of mystery through his eyes, he has shown remarkable skill. It’s this understated approach that adds power to his presence.
To obtain pins that matched the required size for the expressionless eyes, our team meticulously measured 500 black pins and narrowed it down to 15 appropriate pairs.
Interestingly enough, the reappearance of Feathers McGraw isn’t an unprecedented event for Aardman Animations or Park. Last year, we saw the comeback of another infamous villain in “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget,” directed by Sam Fell (Park was occupied with Wallace & Gromit during the sequel). This movie marked the resurgence of Mrs. Tweedy, a formidable foe to our feathered friends. As titans in the stop-motion villain universe, Feathers and Tweedy share the spotlight, but who’s the more malicious and, above all, who would win in a confrontation?
Crossingham proposes a scenario that’s somewhat similar to this: ‘Would you prefer to grapple with a horse in the form of a penguin, or handle a penguin-sized horse?’ He admits, ‘I’m not sure. Either way, it doesn’t sound very appealing.’
Adds Park: “But a penguin-sized horse would be easier though.”
