Wake Up, Sheeple, This Flock Is Solving a Murder Mystery

After watching Wicked: For Good, I realized I’m tired of seeing CGI animals in movies. It made me wonder, whatever happened to using real animals and dubbing their voices, like they did in the old Mister Ed show? (I’m in my 30s, for reference.) I’m not a fan of the CGI animals in movies like Strays or Robert Downey Jr.’s Dolittle. They’re unsettling, and frankly, we don’t need more things to be scared of in the world. I think we should go back to using well-trained animal actors, like the dog Messi in Anatomy of a Fall. If an animal can’t act as well as Messi, they shouldn’t be in a movie. That was my firm belief – until I saw the trailer for The Sheep Detectives on December 18th.

Often, computer-generated animal characters are either used for silly gags or to create overly realistic effects. But the new movie, The Sheep Detectives, gives CGI animals a real purpose: solving a murder! The story centers around a flock of sheep investigating the death of their shepherd, played by Hugh Jackman, who used to read them mystery novels. The film features a strong supporting cast, including Emma Thompson and Nicholas Braun, but the main draw is definitely seeing these animated sheep crack the case. It’s surprising to learn the movie was written by Craig Mazin, known for the intense dramas Chernobyl and The Last of Us – maybe he just needed something lighter after those projects! The Sheep Detectives will hit theaters on May 8, 2026, perfectly timed with shearing season.
