Wait, I Think Project Hail Mary’s Newest Trailer Answered One Of My Biggest Questions

WARNING! Spoilers for Project Hail Mary, the book, are ahead! Read with caution.

I recently finished reading Project Hail Mary before the movie adaptation comes out, and I was really curious about how they’d bring Andy Weir’s story to the screen. My biggest question was how the main character, Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling), would communicate with the alien he meets, Rocky. Now that the official trailer for the 2026 movie is out, I think we have our answer!

Honestly, the moment I finished reading Project Hail Mary, my mind immediately jumped to how a movie adaptation would handle the communication between Ryland and Rocky. The book does a fantastic job of showing Ryland, played by Gosling, developing a way to understand and eventually speak Rocky’s language. I was really curious about how they’d tackle that language barrier on screen, but the trailer actually gave a pretty big hint at the solution. It’s clear they’ve found a way to visually represent that translation process, which is a relief!

The trailer highlights two ways Ryland and Rocky begin to understand each other. One mirrors a key plot point from the book: Ryland uses translation software on his computer, suggesting he’ll create a way to communicate effectively with Rocky. The other shows Ryland learning to understand the alien through gestures.

It’s unclear what will happen next, but I’m hoping Ryland learns to speak Rocky’s language fluently and doesn’t need constant translation. Even if that doesn’t happen, though, I wouldn’t mind – it actually makes the story easier for viewers to follow.

To see how this problem is solved, you’ll need to see Project Hail Mary when it comes out in theaters on March 20, 2026.

More to come…
