Paul Bettany recently revealed more about his role as White Vision in the new Marvel series, VisionQuest. He talked about diving into the character’s thoughts and feelings, collaborating with the show’s creator Terry Matalas, and the complicated relationship Vision has with the artificial intelligences within him.
VisionQuest’s Paul Bettany on how Vision is dealing with Marvel AIs inside his mind
Collider recently interviewed Paul Bettany, star of the show Vision Quest, after the Marvel panel at New York Comic Con. He shared some new information about the upcoming Disney+ spin-off, specifically hinting at what it’s like inside White Vision’s head. According to Bettany, “It’s more cluttered than you’d expect” inside Vision’s mind.
He’s been diligently collecting and memorizing information, almost as if preserving it within his own mind. Naturally, one particular aspect of his knowledge is heavily guarded – a necessary precaution, given that he’s a psychopath. However, he’s remarkably intelligent and capable.
Paul Bettany revealed that Vision’s mind isn’t just one AI, but contains several, including the robotic assistants DUM-E and U from the Iron Man series. He also mentioned a ‘psychopath’ within Vision – referring to Ultron, voiced again by James Spader – suggesting Vision still fights against remnants of his creator’s code. This internal conflict is central to the show, exploring Vision’s journey to understand who he is and become emotionally independent.
Terry Matalas, who led the creative team for Star Trek: Picard Season 3 and also created VisionQuest, originally intended the series to pick up the story of White Vision following the events of WandaVision. As actor Paul Bettany explained, at the end of WandaVision, White Vision gains access to all of Red Vision’s memories, including those experienced within the magical reality created in the show.
He explained that Terry was having difficulty figuring out how to connect emotion to the memories of White Vision, despite having a strong initial idea.
Paul Bettany highlighted the impressive way creator Jac Schaeffer visually showed Vision’s changing inner life. The series stars Bettany and J. Spader, alongside Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H., T’Nia Miller as Jocasta, Todd Stashwick as Paladin, and Faran Tahir returning as Raza. Christopher J. Byrne and Gandja Monteiro directed the show, which will debut on Disney+ in 2026.
