The creators behind Yakuza shared some early, developmental footage for the upcoming version of the Virtua Fighter series.
Following The Game Awards 2024, Ryu Ga Gotoku studio unveiled supplementary content related to their upcoming game, aimed at rekindling interest in the renowned fighting game series. This Japanese developer emphasized that the video isn’t a demonstration of gameplay, but rather a presentation of the “idea” or concept behind the new Virtua Fighter, in actual motion. Notably, the game doesn’t yet have an official title and is referred to as the “New Virtua Fighter Project” by its developers.
What this isn’t suggesting is that it’s only a slideshow and concept art. In fact, the Ryu Ga Gotoku team showcased a video featuring a battle between two iterations of their series icon, Akira Yuki, by utilizing the game engine.
You can watch the material from the CES 2025 trade fair below.
Undeniably, let us reiterate: this is not a demonstration of gameplay. During The Game Awards 2024 broadcast, we caught a glimpse of what appeared to be gameplay footage. However, it’s beneficial to analyze the fresh content against the current pre-alpha version of the game to assess just how similar the “concept” might be.
Despite being brief and pre-written, this material still ignited excitement among fans of the series and fighting games overall. In recent times, the genre might not be undergoing a full revival, but it’s undeniably thriving – with hits like Tekken 8, Street Fighter 6, and Mortal Kombat 1 (despite their challenges), along with the remarkable sales of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, to name a few.
Despite some players expressing concerns about the flamboyance of contemporary fighting games, with their vibrant visuals and unconventional attack designs, the latest version of VF appears to be more grounded in realism. Compared to other titles, it seems to avoid excessive special effects, such as the bright and potentially distracting “sparks” reminiscent of Tekken 8, that some players find overly colorful and disruptive.
Surely, it’s worth repeating that what we’re discussing isn’t actual gameplay and the concept for the upcoming Virtua Fighter could still be subject to substantial alterations. At present, we don’t have any details about the name of the game, its launch date, or the systems it plans to support.
