Vince Gilligan on where he “draws the line” with spoilers after Pluribus Google Earth reveal

Vince Gilligan, the creator of Pluribus, recently discussed the spoiler revealed by a Google Earth discovery about the ending of Episode 7 with TopMob. He’s happy fans are actively searching for clues, but feels there’s a limit to how far that searching should go.

In the latest episode of the Apple TV series, Manousos (Carlos-Manuel Vesga) takes a risky journey through the dangerous Darién Gap, and Carol (Rhea Seehorn) struggles with feeling alone.

Ever since Carol used a truth serum on Zosia to try and learn more about the virus, the group had been isolating her. After weeks of being alone, Carol finally gives in and writes “come back” on her driveway, which ultimately leads Zosia to return.

However, fans had noticed the phrase “come back” days earlier while examining old Pluribus data on Google Earth. Gilligan became aware of this and expressed his support for people trying to predict future developments.

Pluribus writers discuss crossing the spoiler line

You know, when I heard Gilligan say he totally gets doing silly things, I was right there with him! He admitted he’s done his fair share of goofing off. But he also made a really good point – he’s not okay with anyone intentionally messing things up for others. That’s a line he won’t cross, and honestly, I feel the same way!

As the director of Pluribus, I’m really glad people are digging into the game and getting invested! Honestly, I think it’s cool when players discover something on their own and just enjoy it. I’d rather they keep those discoveries to themselves than try to ruin the experience for others, you know?

Gilligan shared a case of spoiler-hunting gone wrong: Quentin Tarantino’s film, The Hateful Eight.

In 2014, the script for Quentin Tarantino’s film was leaked online after he shared it with a limited number of actors. He was very upset and initially announced he would cancel the project because of this leak.

He initially hesitated, but eventually decided to move forward with the film after hosting a live reading with actors like Samuel L. Jackson and Kurt Russell. Though the script leak caused significant delays, The Hateful Eight was finally released in 2015.

Vince Gilligan explained that a few films back, Quentin Tarantino had a script leaked online before he could even begin filming. Gilligan called this a serious offense, saying it felt like ‘a crime against art’.

Alison Tatlock, a writer and producer for Pluribus, shared that they enjoy seeing fan speculation. It shows the show is complex and engaging enough to spark discussion and debate, which they see as a positive sign.

“That’s very different than finding evidence of something and spoiling it for the world.”

Smith expressed his disbelief that the Google Earth image captured the set precisely when they had painted the words “come here” on it.

Gilligan playfully remarked, “It’s comforting, isn’t it? Google is always monitoring us. It’s nice to know they’re looking out for us.” This comment perfectly captures the perspective of someone completely accustomed to constant surveillance.

You can now watch the first seven episodes of Pluribus on Apple TV. If you’re curious about the show, you’ll find details about the disturbing practice of the hive mind – specifically, their consumption of humans – the significance of the character Carol Sturka, and why it doesn’t rely on a surprising twist like those often found in M. Night Shyamalan films.
