Let’s be real, you’re likely feeling bored at work, pretending to be busy by scrolling through things on your computer. (Did I just reveal something about myself?) Perhaps you’d rather be lost in Sucker Punch Productions’ new samurai adventure, Ghost of Yotei, but you still have hours before you can escape home. If you’re looking for a way to pass the time, you should absolutely listen to the newly released “Music from Watanabe Mode” soundtrack. It’s seriously a great atmosphere.
As a huge fan of Ghost of Tsushima, I was so excited for Ghost of Yotei, the PlayStation 5 sequel! It feels a lot like the first game, which is great, but it also has some cool new stuff. One thing I was *really* looking forward to was Watanabe Mode. It’s a collaboration with Samurai Champloo director Shinichirō Watanabe, and he created original lo-fi music specifically for it. At first, you could *only* hear these awesome beats if you played in Watanabe Mode on your PS5 – it was one of three options, each inspired by a different samurai film director like Akira Kurosawa and Takashi Miike. But now, Sony has released the soundtrack on all the major music streaming services, which is fantastic news! I can listen to it anywhere now!
The “Ghost of Yotei – Music from Watanabe Mode – EP” came out on October 3rd-just after Yotei launched on PS5-and features almost 30 minutes of relaxing music. You can find it on most popular platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, Pandora, YouTube Music, and even a streaming service called Deezer that I wasn’t familiar with.
The atmosphere is very relaxed and cool. If you enjoyed the music in Samurai Champloo – especially the work Watanabe did on its soundtrack – you’ll likely appreciate this energetic but concise EP. It would sound right at home in an episode of SamCham, perfectly complementing the subdued mood of Yotei’s intense stories. It’s a great blend of seriousness and tranquility.
Ghost of Yotei released on PlayStation 5 and received mostly positive reviews. In our review, Richard Wakeling gave it a 9/10, praising how it “builds and improves upon its predecessor with a gripping story, rewarding exploration, and fantastic combat, with each aspect emphasizing the characteristics of a new protagonist.” Now that the game is available, we’ve been working hard on several guides to help you enjoy your time in 1600 Ezo (present-day Hokkaido, Japan). These guides cover everything from weapon locations and the best skills to unlock, to finding all the wolf dens and choosing the right game mode. (If you’re asking for my recommendation? Play Watanabe Mode. It’s the best.)
