On Saturday, veteran Taiwanese producer Patrick Mao Huang showcased a number of upcoming projects at the Asian Contents and Film Market in Busan. These projects will be jointly produced by his company, Flash Forward Entertainment, based in Taipei.

Under the direction of Shen Ko-Shang (“Two Juliets”), “Deep Quiet Room” is a full-length movie. The plot goes as follows: After Ming’s pregnant wife, Yi-ting, tragically took her own life unexpectedly, Ming decides to care for his father-in-law. However, as he delves deeper into the circumstances surrounding Yi-ting’s death, he uncovers a shocking truth about her family that led to her demise. This project has been showcased at various market events such as the 2022 MIA Market in Rome, the 2022 Tokyo Gap-Financing Market, and the 2020 Taipei Golden Horse FPP Project Market.

“The Sleepless Girl” by first-time director François Chang, was honored with the Most Innovative Project Award at the 2019 Shanghai International Film Festival Market. The story revolves around a Japanese girl who hasn’t slept for 17 years, but eventually falls asleep, causing the world to stand on the edge of disaster. Simultaneously, a Taiwanese YouTuber stumbles upon an astounding secret, which plunges them into a whirlwind of challenging choices.

The documentary titled “Mothers in Transit,” created by Wei Dai and Chang Tzu-Hsiang, was backed by TAICCA and took part in the Locarno Film Festival Pro Match Me! and the Taiwan Creative Content Fest Pitching Forum in 2022. For quite some time, Taiwanese women have pursued surrogates in Ukraine to realize their aspiration of parenthood. However, when the Russian invasion interferes with the surrogacy industry, the dream of parenthood for Taiwanese mothers and the income source for Ukrainian surrogates encounters significant obstacles, as suggested by the synopsis.

The interactive animated documentary titled “The Island of Shells,” helmed by directors Chang Hao-Yuan, Wei Shiue-Ying and Ko Chia-Wen, is a shadow-puppetry project that retells the experiences of Fred Him-San Chin, a former political prisoner during Taiwan’s White Terror period in the 1970s.

This year, Charles Hu’s “As the River Goes By,” Nelicia Low’s “Pierce,” and Amanda Nell Eu’s “Tiger Stripes” are the three movies that Huang will be presenting at the Busan International Film Festival.
