‘Veneno,’ ‘Cardo’ Producer Suma Content’s New Musical Comedy Series ‘Mariliendre’ Honors the ‘Fundamental Woman in the Life of Every Gay Man’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a lifelong fan of Spanish television and music, I can confidently say that “Mariliendre” has piqued my interest like no other series in recent memory! Having grown up in Madrid myself, I’ve always been fond of the vibrant energy that Chueca exudes, and the prospect of a musical comedy set there is nothing short of exhilarating.

Collaboratively, Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo’s production company Suma Content (“Las Mesias,” “Vestidos de Azul”), along with Spanish streaming platform Atresplayer, are working together on a new, fictional musical comedy series titled “Mariliendre.” The series is the creation of writer Javier Ferreiro.

At FesTVal Vitoria earlier this month, the show titled “Mariliendre” was debuted, and we at EbMaster have been granted exclusive access to the initial international trailer for it.

Located in the lively and LGBTQ+ famous district of Chueca, which is arguably one of the most vibrant gay neighborhoods in Madrid, if not the world, “Mariliendre” chronicles the life of Meri Román, a previous queen of Madrid’s nightlife scene. At 35 years old, her days filled with recognition are now behind her, and she finds herself reminiscing about the past as a once-celebrated diva. Bored by her current, routine life, she struggles to move forward.

Following the passing of her father, Meri finds herself reminiscing with her old circle of friends from the LGBTQ+ community. This reunion stirs vivid recollections of a vibrant past filled with memorable moments and popular tunes that characterized that era in her life. As she delves back into those days gone by, maybe Meri can gain a clearer understanding of her present self and identity.

As reported by Suma Content’s team, this upcoming series promises to present a strong feminist perspective and tackle thought-provoking themes such as identity, body image, mental health, motherhood, the chosen and unchosen families, all set against a backdrop of iconic Spanish pop music from the 2000s. These tunes are timeless classics that continue to echo at every gay gathering even today. The producers assure us that this musical series, unlike any other produced in Spain, is truly unique.

Ferreiro clarified to EbMaster that ‘Mariliendre’ is a musical piece delving into the character of the pivotal woman in every gay man’s life, often referred to as their friend Mariliendre. It’s a heartfelt homage to all those women who selflessly gave their time and energy for us.

He’s talking about a collection of pieces where he shares insights about significant events in his life, including family relationships and mental wellness. He decided to express these thoughts through music and humor because he feels they are powerful means to convey experiences that can be joyful and challenging at the same time.

As a movie critic, I’m excited to share my thoughts on the upcoming series titled “Mariliendre.” This captivating project is penned by Ferreiro in collaboration with Paloma Rando and Carmen Aumedes. What makes this series even more intriguing is that Ferreiro will be at the helm, directing each episode.

Emerging actress Blanca Martínez Rodrigo (known for “Alimañas” and “In Love All Over Again”) has been announced to play Meri in the upcoming series. Notably, she was a key player in Netflix’s highly-acclaimed Spanish hospital drama “Breathless,” which continues to be one of the streaming platform’s most-watched non-English language shows since its release on August 30th. Joining her in the main cast will be Martin Urrutia, Omar Ayuso, Carlos González, Yenesi, Álvaro Jurado, Mariona Terés, Mariano Peña and Nina.

Beyond the camera’s view, we have a talented team contributing as well. This includes co-directors of photography Lali Rubio and Andreu Adam, art director Marta Loza, costume designer Diana García, and hair and makeup supervisors Ana Urosa and Raúl Gallego.

Under the supervision of Atresplayer, “Mariliendre” was created by Suma Content, with Montse García and Andrea H. Catalá serving as executive producers, and Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi overseeing production.

As a movie critic, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing the creative prowess of Suma Content, particularly their knack for song and dance productions, which isn’t common in Spain but they’ve managed to master. In 2017, under their former name, Suma Latina, they brought to life the musical comedy “Holy Camp,” a cult sensation penned and directed by Los Javis. The duo has also been responsible for series like “La Mesías,” which frequently incorporate choreographed musical sequences, even though these productions weren’t necessarily categorized as musicals.
