In James Cameron‘s Avatar: Fire and Ash, a surprising and intense scene almost didn’t make the final cut. It features the characters Varang (Oona Chaplin) and Quaritch (Stephen Lang) unexpectedly connecting through a seductive encounter, culminating in Varang giving Quaritch a powerful hallucinogenic drug.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron shared why he appreciates the scene, noting that the unpredictability and the captivating performances of the two characters—especially the actress, who he described as ‘mesmerizing’—make it stand out.
He says he didn’t fully understand the scene he’d written until he watched the actors perform it. He realized it involved a double seduction – each character was trying to manipulate the other. While it appeared she was in control, he’d actually planned everything and succeeded. He’s pleased with how the scene’s psychological interplay unfolded.
The editing team suggested shortening a scene to bring the movie’s three-hour and fifteen-minute length down, but director James Cameron wouldn’t allow it. Here’s what he had to say about it:
I said: “Guys, you’re about to become unemployed — put it back, every line.”
