As a gaming enthusiast, I’m totally hyped about jumping into this year’s The International tournament for Dota 2! Today, right here in Germany, the competition is underway, and what an amazing feeling it was to hear co-founder of Valve, Gabe Newell, give his opening remarks. He shared a heartfelt sentiment that resonated with me – he’s developed a genuine love for the game and continues to play it daily, even when dealing with some online harassment. I can definitely relate to that passion for gaming and the resilience needed to power through the occasional tough patches!
Prior to my initial International experience back in 2011, I was quite fond of the game. However, following The International tournament, I found myself falling deeply in love with it. It isn’t merely the game that I adore, but its community as well. Occasionally, I encounter players who may vent their frustration my way in chat or suggest I should uninstall the game, but these are just expressions of their passion for the game and the vibrant atmosphere they cultivate. And that’s why, after all these years, I continue to play Dota every single day, as Newell stated.
In 2007, the first International gaming tournament was hosted in Cologne, Germany, which is also where an annual event called Gamescom takes place. However, this year’s edition of the tournament has shifted locations to Hamburg, Germany, and the competitions are currently underway. Teams are battling it out for a substantial chunk of prize money.
On Steam, Dota 2, a free game, often ranks among the most played titles consistently. Today, on September 11th, it boasted over 780,000 simultaneous players at its peak, second only to Valve’s other massive success, Counter-Strike 2.
In other updates about Newell, this billionaire resides on a yacht and takes brief interludes from business conferences to explore scuba diving. On occasions when he’s not submerged beneath the sea, he encourages young people to educate themselves about AI, as he firmly holds that mastery of artificial intelligence will be crucial for achieving success in the future.
In the early ’80s, Newell decided to abandon his studies at Harvard to join Microsoft. This move eventually made him a millionaire within the company alongside Mike Harrington. Later on, they established Valve together. Today, Forbes values his net worth at an astounding $9.5 billion. Remarkably, despite his astronomical wealth, he still engages with fans and even personally handed out Steam Decks in 2022.
