Valve Updates Counter-Strike, Tanking Re-Seller Market

Counter-Strike is a hugely popular tactical shooting game, and a big part of its success is the ability to trade items within the game. Things like digital gloves and knives can sell for thousands, even millions, of dollars. However, a recent update dramatically changed things, essentially erasing about $1.75 billion in value from these items.

A recent report from Bloomberg shows that prices for items in the popular game Counter-Strike—including guns, knives, and gloves—dropped by 25% in just two days, between October 22nd and 23rd. This happened after the game’s developer, Valve, changed how these items are traded. Pricempire, a company that tracks these markets, estimates the total loss to be in the billions, and their marketing manager, Ethan MacDonald, told Bloomberg he was surprised by how quickly prices fell.

“This was a complete shock to the community,” he said. “This completely changes the supply of Counter-Strike’s most sought-after and expensive tier of items.”

This update has significantly impacted many players. One trader, in his twenties, saw his in-game assets drop in value by over $270,000 between Wednesday and Thursday – he’d started with $1 million worth. Players in China, who are major traders in the game, voiced their concerns about the price changes on Douyin, a popular video platform. Based on this, the game’s creator believes a period of inflated prices has come to an end.

Fans are working on a remake of the classic Counter-Strike 1.6, called Counter-Strike: Legacy, and plan to release it on Steam Early Access later this year. However, recent reports indicate the project may face issues and potentially be cancelled due to concerns from Valve.
