Valve reached a deal with Garry’s Mod creator. Players will earn money on Steam for games created in S&box

For several years, the title known as S&box has been under development, envisioned as a follow-up to Garry’s Mod. The team behind it, Facepunch, recently unveiled intriguing insights about the future direction of this distinctive gaming platform.

It has been discovered that creations made by fans within the Sandbox (S&box) platform can be converted into independent games, which can subsequently be shared on Steam. Unlike with Garry’s Mod, such distribution was not previously an option.

  1. S&box uses the Source 2 engine, so in practice it allows small developers to build their own games based on this technology. Such a solution requires a change in the licensing agreements with Valve Corporation, but both parties have already agreed on this matter, and now their lawyers are in the final stages of approving the new provisions.
  2. The head of Facepunch studio, Garry Newman, is very pleased with all of this. As he explained, he deeply regretted that fans couldn’t earn money from their creations in Garry’s Mod.

As a gamer, here’s my take: Not only can I export projects made in S&box, but Facepunch Studio is also going to let creators earn money from active mods within the game. They’ll pay developers based on the hours players spend playing their modifications.

  1. It’s supposed to be financed through the sale of skins and the S&box itself. To help with this, work is underway on the possibility of adding your own costumes to the store in this game.
  2. However, there won’t be an option to sell access to mods alone – these will always be available to anyone who has S&box. Therefore, if a developer wants to monetize their projects, it will be necessary to export them to a separate game.

If everything proceeds smoothly, S&box could potentially evolve into an adult-oriented version of Roblox, boasting a significantly more sophisticated engine. Newman is determined to avoid the pitfalls associated with this popular platform and ensure that user-generated projects don’t devolve into pay-to-win scenarios.

At the end of July last year, S&box was made available for testing to all interested parties.
