Valve finally restocks Steam Deck OLED but with massive price increase

The Steam Deck OLED, Valve’s popular handheld gaming device, is available again after being out of stock for several months. However, customers are now finding that it costs significantly more than it used to.

Earlier this year, Valve alerted customers that they might occasionally experience limited availability of the Steam Deck. This is because of ongoing problems getting enough memory and storage parts needed to build the handheld gaming PCs.

The company has increased the cost of multiple Steam Deck OLED handhelds, with some models now priced more than $200 above their previous MSRP. The 512GB Steam Deck OLED now costs $789, up from $549, while the 1TB OLED model has jumped from $649 to $949.

Prices for used devices also went up: the 512GB OLED model now costs $629, while the 1TB version is priced at $759.

Valve already blamed memory shortages for Steam hardware problems

Okay, so Valve just raised the price of the Steam Deck OLED, and honestly, I kinda saw it coming. They’ve been hinting for months that parts – especially RAM and storage – were getting way more expensive worldwide, and it finally hit the Deck’s price tag.

Earlier this year, Valve expressed disappointment about delays with the Steam Machine console. They explained that a shortage of memory chips caused them to reconsider when and how much their hardware would cost. This same shortage also limited the number of Steam Deck OLED consoles available in many areas.

Valve has consistently explained that the current shortage of parts makes it difficult to keep hardware prices down. This is especially true because the growing demand for AI is increasing the cost of components like memory and storage.

Before raising prices in the US, the company had already increased the price of the Steam Deck OLED in countries like Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

The company recently launched the new Steam Controller, which gamers have been eagerly anticipating. Pre-orders began soon after the announcement, as Valve continues to expand its range of gaming hardware.
