‘Until Dawn’ Trailer: Teens Get Killed by Monsters and Turn Back Time in Horror Video Game Adaptation

Every action brings about a reaction. Sony Pictures has unveiled the initial trailer for “Until Dawn,” their live-action version based on the well-known 2015 PlayStation horror game.

In the video game “Until Dawn,” created by Supermassive Games, you’ll guide a group of eight teenagers who have gathered in a secluded cabin, a year after two of their friends mysteriously vanished. The game employs a crucial “butterfly effect” mechanic, where your decisions influence the course of events significantly, helping you navigate encounters with masked assailants, flesh-eating monsters, and uncovering who among them can truly be trusted.

As I eagerly watch the trailer unfold, it’s clear that the intriguing concept of the butterfly effect is brilliantly brought to life. Characters find themselves facing various monstrous foes, but there’s a twist – they mysteriously resurrect, living through the same chilling events again and again, with subtle variations each time.

In a story penned by Gary Daubmerman (originally drafted by Blair Butler), “Until Dawn” revolves around Clover, portrayed by Ella Rubin, who travels to a distant cabin following her sister Melanie’s (Maia Mitchell) mysterious vanishing. The character of Max, previously played by Clover’s ex-boyfriend, will now be brought to life by Michael Cimino. Joining the cast are Ji-young Yoo as Max’s step-sister Megan, Odessa A’zion as Clover’s friend Nina, and Belmont Cameli as Nina’s boyfriend Abel. Notably, Peter Stormare will reprise his role from the game as Dr. Alan J Hill.

The “Until Dawn” movie, helmed by director David F. Sandberg, isn’t a straight-up adaptation of the video game, so viewers shouldn’t anticipate seeing Rami Malek’s character Josh or Hayden Panettiere’s character Sam battling wendigo creatures. Rather, Sandberg’s film focuses on a fresh group of unfortunate teenagers, although the presence of a missing sister suggests that Dauberman’s script loosely follows some key points from the original game.

The movie is being made by a collaboration of Screen Gems, PlayStation Productions, Vertigo Entertainment, Coin Operated, and Mangata.

“Until Dawn” tears into theaters on April 25. Watch the trailer below.
