As a long-time fan of indie games and someone who appreciates the hard work that goes into creating heartfelt narratives like Unpacking, I must say I’m disheartened by Nintendo’s apparent lack of action against spoofed versions of the game on their eShop. It’s frustrating to see creative directors like Wren Brier having to take to social media platforms to voice their concerns about these egregious scams that are misleading Nintendo customers into buying cheap imitations.

Navigating digital marketplaces might occasionally lead to encountering unwanted junk, mess, or fraudulent games disguised as legitimate ones. Although players have raised concerns about these storefronts over time, which has led to some changes, Nintendo is currently facing criticism from a developer for not addressing the issue of counterfeit games more effectively.

Over the past few years, Unpacking has garnered immense affection as an independent release due to its emotionally resonant storyline and relatable themes exploring life’s transitions by unwrapping items. Its widespread acclaim led to numerous parodies or imitations of “Unpacking” games on the Nintendo eShop. However, Witch Beam, the game’s developer, has voiced criticism towards Nintendo for these unauthorized adaptations.

On November 28th, 2024, Wren Brier, the creative director of Unpacking, shared a post to their Bluesky account. The initial post contained an image showing several fake versions of “Unpacking” games available on the Nintendo eShop. Brier expressed concern with the comment “It gets worse…” and later responded to this post on December 16th, 2024, on the same platform.

For more than two weeks now, these items have remained on the eShop without any response from Nintendo regarding the deceptive practices we’ve reported. These underhanded schemes misuse our registered game title and intentionally dupe Nintendo consumers into purchasing counterfeit versions of the genuine product.

The image attached here is a creation of CGI LAB, as seen in Brier’s pots last month. Notably, their game “Unpacking Universe Dreams” is still available and discounted on the Nintendo eShop at this time. Regarding other games that seem to mimic “Unpacking,” which were also highlighted by Brier, it’s possible they have been taken down or removed, although we cannot verify this fact. As per a report from ComicBook, this imitation game appears exclusively on the Nintendo eShop.

In our efforts to keep you informed about this evolving situation, it remains undetermined whether Nintendo has taken action against the counterfeit “Unpacking” games following Brier’s posts. Previously, Nintendo found themselves in a sticky situation due to an influx of fake games on their eShop. To address this issue, they withdrew numerous games and their listings that imitated two popular titles, Police Simulator: Patrol Duty and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us. It was this latter instance that raised Sony’s concerns (courtesy of Nintendo Life).
