Unpacking Creative Director Challenges Nintendo To Address "Egregious Scams" On eShop

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say I’m disheartened by the state of affairs regarding Unpacking and its counterfeit versions on the Nintendo eShop. It’s not just about two editions; it’s about integrity, fairness, and respect for the hard work put into a game.

On the Nintendo eShop, you have an option to purchase either Unpacking or Unpacking: Deluxe Edition. While they may seem like two versions of the same soothing game, that is not entirely accurate. In fact, a developer from the studio behind Unpacking, Witch Beam, has labeled Unpacking: Deluxe Edition as one of several “questionable practices” or scams on the Nintendo Switch’s online marketplace.

Eurogamer noticed that Unpacking’s creative director, Wren Brier, expressed concern on BlueSky and called on Nintendo to eliminate fraudulent listings from the Switch’s eShop. “These counterfeits have been available for over two weeks now,” Brier stated. “Despite our repeated reports of these deceptive scams, which are misusing our trademarked game name and intentionally deceiving Nintendo customers into purchasing inferior replicas instead.

It’s been more than two weeks now, and the items on the eShop remain unchanged. Nintendo has yet to address our complaints about these blatant frauds that are exploiting our trademarked game title and intentionally deceiving Nintendo customers into purchasing inferior replicas.

Initially, Brier shared a post titled “Unpacking clones” on BlueSky on November 28. TopMob subsequently searched for “unpacking” on Nintendo’s official site. The search yielded the original Unpacking as the top result, but next to it was displayed Unpacking: Deluxe Edition. Although the thumbnail images for both titles are distinct, Unpacking: Deluxe Edition is priced lower and might cause some confusion among users.

The publisher behind Unpacking: Deluxe Edition is CGI Lab. Other games available on the Switch eShop from the company include Cowboys vs Zombies: Deluxe Edition, Anime Puzzle Quest: Deluxe Edition, and Car Parking: Premium Edition.

On previous occasions, Witch Beam has encountered duplicates of Unpacking, not just this time. In fact, a replica of Unpacking surged to the highest positions on the App Store rankings back in January 2022. The original version of Unpacking was launched in 2021 and gained widespread acclaim, with numerous nominations at the Independent Games Festival.
