Unlike The Winchesters, This Supernatural Prequel Would Have Lasted More Than One Season

Despite several attempts, spin-offs of Supernatural haven’t been successful. While Supernatural: Bloodlines didn’t deserve a full series, Wayward Sisters was unfairly canceled. Even when a spin-off, The Winchesters, finally launched, it was cut after just one season.

It’s reasonable to wonder if the core idea of Supernatural could succeed without Sam and Dean Winchester. However, the show hasn’t always made the best choices with spinoffs. Wayward Sisters had a strong following but wasn’t developed, while The Winchesters moved forward despite creating some inconsistencies with the established storyline.

A Supernatural Prequel With Samuel Colt Would’ve Been Better Than The Winchesters

The main challenge with creating a new show connected to Supernatural is finding the right balance – it needs to feel familiar, but not like a simple repeat. Successful spin-offs vary – Better Call Saul cleverly built on Breaking Bad, enhancing both series, while Yellowstone has flourished by establishing its own unique identity.

As a longtime viewer, I’ve noticed Supernatural has struggled to find its footing with spin-offs. It seems they’ve ended up in a strange middle ground. Bloodlines felt like a completely different show, losing all connection to the original, while Wayward Sisters and The Winchesters basically just felt like Supernatural with a different set of faces – the heart of the show, Sam and Dean, were missing.

A prequel focusing on Samuel Colt and the original hunter who commissioned his famous weapon was the only spinoff with real potential. The series would have explored Colt’s life and the mysterious figure he created the weapon for.

Though it never happened, Supernatural creator Eric Kripke once revealed the writing team had briefly discussed a spin-off centered around Samuel Colt (according to Starpulse). They felt the show’s existing story already had a Western feel, making Colt a natural fit. A Samuel Colt spin-off would have kept the tone of Supernatural—something the Bloodlines spin-off attempt didn’t quite achieve—while still feeling fresh and distinct from other spin-offs like Wayward Sisters or The Winchesters because it would have been set 200 years in the past with a new cast of characters.

Combining Westerns with paranormal themes is a popular choice in fiction, and the “Weird Western” subgenre has become increasingly popular recently. Even earlier Westerns, like Clint Eastwood’s 1973 film High Plains Drifter, successfully used spooky elements to create a compelling atmosphere.

Because The Winchesters took place in the 1970s, it didn’t feel drastically different from the world of Sam and Dean. While the absence of cell phones was a nice touch, the show still featured things like cars and payphones, and it used familiar music and movies. Moving the story back to the 1830s with Samuel Colt would have shown a truly different world – monsters battling hunters who traveled by horseback – a much bigger change in setting and lifestyle.

Supernatural Already Set Up The Perfect Story For A Samuel Colt Spinoff

A show focusing on Samuel Colt would have had an advantage over The Winchesters: a fresh start. Because so little is known about Colt and hunters in the 1800s, a prequel series could have built its own unique place within the Supernatural universe, largely avoiding established story conflicts and limitations.

You know, as much as I loved Supernatural, I always felt they left some really cool threads hanging, especially regarding Samuel Colt. The show hinted at this incredible hunter who originally used the gun, and even used six of the thirteen special bullets it held. We never really found out who this hunter was – it could even have been Samuel himself! But just thinking about six monsters powerful enough to need those bullets… that’s six awesome stories the show never got around to telling, and it’s a shame!

Since the Winchester brothers exist two hundred years after Samuel Colt, a show focusing on Colt could introduce entirely new enemies and monsters that were vanquished before the 21st century. Previous attempts like Wayward Sisters and The Winchesters didn’t quite achieve this, with The Winchesters‘ Akrida storyline feeling like an unsatisfying twist.

It’s uncertain what the future holds for the Supernatural universe, particularly after another attempt at a spinoff didn’t succeed. If The CW were to explore the series again, though, a prequel focusing on Samuel Colt would be a promising direction.
