Universal & State Investigators Confirm Stardust Racers Functioned Properly in Tragic Epic Universe Roller Coaster Death

I was really saddened to learn about the tragic accident that happened at Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe on September 17th. Karen Irwin, the President and COO, recently shared a letter with all the team members acknowledging the loss of a man from Florida on the Stardust Racers coaster. It’s just heartbreaking to think about.

In a message first shared with WESH 2 News Orlando, Irwin expressed sympathy, saying, “We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss and our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the guest involved, as well as everyone affected.”

Universal Orlando Resort President Karen Irwin shared with employees that an internal review found the Stardust Racers ride functioned correctly, all equipment stayed in place throughout the ride’s operation, and staff followed all safety protocols.

We’ve completed an initial review and found that the ride’s mechanics worked correctly, all equipment was in good condition both before, during, and after the ride, and our staff followed proper procedures. The attraction is still closed while we conduct a thorough investigation alongside the ride’s manufacturer. Ensuring guest safety remains our top priority.

What Happened?

As a huge theme park fan, I was really saddened to hear about the incident at Epic Universe last Wednesday. It happened around 9:20 p.m. on their new dueling coaster, Stardust Racers. It’s just awful to think about, and I hope everyone involved is okay.

A visitor became unresponsive while on the ride and was later declared dead at a local hospital. The individual has been identified as 32-year-old Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, who had a known spinal condition and needed assistance transferring from his wheelchair to enjoy the ride.

Universal Orlando and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office are both looking into what happened. As a precaution and out of respect for the family, the Stardust Racers ride has been temporarily closed and will stay closed while investigations and safety checks are completed.

State Investigators Align With Universal’s Findings

State investigators confirmed on September 22nd that they concur with Universal’s own investigation results.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says their investigation’s results match what Universal has found after looking at the same data. The investigation is still in progress, and they will share more details when they can.

The family of the victim has hired civil rights attorney Ben Crump. His office stated they are requesting complete openness and access to all relevant information – like maintenance records, inspection reports, ride information, and video – to determine what happened leading to Kevin’s death.

Currently, no one has sued Universal or the company that made the roller coaster, Mack Rides.

Spotlight on Mack Rides

Mack Rides is a German company that has been making amusement park rides for over 100 years. They also own and operate Europa-Park, a popular theme park in Rust, Germany.

The company builds its rides using insights gained directly from operating them, ensuring a practical and effective design process.

Mack is working with TÜV SÜD safety expert Roman Hauer to guarantee all rides are safe and meet worldwide standards. Most of the key parts for these rides are made at Mack’s own factory in Waldkirch, which allows them to closely monitor and ensure high quality.

Although Stardust Racers has long been known for being safe and inventive, a recent incident has led to closer examination of how the company operates.

Looking Ahead

Universal remains at the center of attention as the investigation continues.

Irwin closed her letter by encouraging staff to lean on each other during this difficult time.

Please remember that this is still an active investigation as things unfold. We encourage everyone to support each other, and to utilize the emotional support resources available, both in person and online. Thank you for consistently demonstrating our company values and your dedication to our guests and colleagues, especially during challenging times. By working together with compassion, care, and professionalism, we’ll continue to move forward.
