United Kingdom’s Ministers Will “Look Into” Rockstar’s Dev Firings, Says Prime Minister

In late October, Rockstar Games terminated the employment of over 30 workers at its UK-based Rockstar North studio, citing serious misconduct. However, the company is now facing accusations of attempting to prevent unionization, as many of those fired were either members of or actively organizing with the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain. The situation has drawn attention from high-level UK officials, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and a Member of Parliament now publicly questioning Rockstar’s actions.

This is a very worrying situation,” said Starmer. “Everyone who works has the right to join a union, and we’re committed to protecting workers’ rights and making sure they aren’t punished for being union members. Our team will investigate this specific case and provide an update to the member who brought it to our attention.

Chris Murray, the MP for Edinburgh East and Musselburgh, raised the issue after meeting with Rockstar Games on behalf of the affected workers. He said Rockstar first insisted he sign a non-disclosure agreement before they would talk, but they backed down when he refused. Murray also expressed skepticism about Rockstar’s explanation for the job losses.

According to Murray, Rockstar dismissed 31 employees without offering any proof or allowing union representation. The Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) believes this was an attempt to discourage union activity. After meeting with Rockstar, Murray remained concerned about their legal compliance and potential union busting, as the company failed to adequately explain the dismissals. He found the process used to fire so many staff members troubling, wasn’t convinced the action was justified, and was left without a clear understanding of the reasons behind the immediate dismissal of the 31 employees.

According to a recent report, Rockstar Games let go of several developers after they discussed the company’s new rules for its internal messaging system, Slack, on Discord. More than 200 Rockstar employees have since called for the developers to be brought back, and protests have been held at Rockstar offices to support them. As of now, the situation hasn’t been resolved.
