People online are captivated by a pair of unusual fish, nicknamed ‘doomsday’ fish, that recently appeared on a beach in Cabo, Mexico. Sightings of these rare creatures are very uncommon.
The ocean is full of amazing and unusual creatures, and they often capture our imagination more than land animals. Because so much of the sea is unexplored, many fish and sharks are rarely seen, which makes it incredibly exciting – and raises a lot of questions – when they do appear.
In February, cameras captured footage of two rare oarfish off the coast of Mexico. Often called ‘doomsday fish,’ these creatures typically live very deep underwater – around 3,000 feet – making this sighting uncommon.
Large, unusual creatures appeared on a beach, causing both curiosity and worry among people nearby and online.
Deep-sea oarfish surface in Mexico for first time in years
Monica Pittenger filmed a rare deep-sea oarfish while at the beach and shared the video on Instagram on March 4th, explaining why the sighting was so interesting.
“It felt like I was watching a movie, not real life,” she explained, adding that her sister was really eager to help the fish return to the ocean. “I was completely stunned – I’d never witnessed anything similar and kept wondering if it was actually happening.”
Okay, so I’ll admit, when the second one showed up, I totally started to freak out. I was thinking, ‘What is that?’ Then we got closer, and honestly, it was unlike anything I’d ever seen in a game before. We all just kept saying, ‘No way, this can’t be happening!’

Pittenger explained that both fish swam away, describing the encounter as “very surreal” once she understood how unusual it was.
The video has sparked online worry, especially considering the fish’s nickname. One person commented, “It’s a beautiful story, but finding out two ‘doomsday fish’ appeared around the same time isn’t exactly reassuring.”
“The last known washed on shore was dead in 2024 in San Diego,” another pointed out.
Some people watching wondered if the video was created using artificial intelligence and if they were being misled, but that’s not what happened.
