Ukrainian YouTuber arrested in Japan after sneaking into Fukushima

A Ukrainian YouTuber, who has more than 6 million followers, and two companions have been taken into custody by police in Japan. They were arrested for livestreaming themselves entering a home in the Fukushima Exclusion Zone without permission.

The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster happened on March 11, 2011. It was triggered by the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, which knocked out the power supply and severely damaged the backup generators at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. This led to a failure of the plant’s systems.

Following the incident, officials began cleaning up the area and created a restricted zone around the power plant, known as the Fukushima Exclusion Zone. Entering this zone is strictly prohibited, and violators could face penalties including up to 30 days in detention and fines of as much as $1,200.

Even though there were signs telling people to keep out, a YouTuber originally from Ukraine went urban exploring with two friends and went into the Exclusion Zone. They streamed the entire adventure live on YouTube.

On Friday, September 27th, the group was taken into custody after people in the community contacted authorities with helpful information. These tips led to the arrest.

According to a spokesperson, officers found and arrested the suspects while they were committing the crime, after receiving a tip from a member of the public, as reported by local news outlets.

The incident quickly became popular online, and even caught the eye of Sergiy Korsunsky, the former Ukrainian ambassador to Japan. He issued a public apology for the actions of the YouTuber.

“This should not be happening,” he wrote on X.

I was really shocked and saddened to hear the news. I want to sincerely apologize for this crime committed by Ukrainians. It’s just awful, and things like this shouldn’t be happening.

Kreosan is the most recent foreign influencer to be discovered entering the exclusion zone without permission, and is among a number of international content creators currently facing online criticism for violating Japanese law while traveling.

In 2023, Twitch streamer and breakdancer ‘JOEYKAOTYK’ and a friend traveled to Fukushima. They filmed themselves breaking the window of an abandoned inn in Okuma Town, Fukushima. Authorities later arrested them on suspicion of illegal trespassing.

So, I was reading about this Kick streamer, Kelton_g, and it’s pretty messed up. Apparently, he got into a physical fight with an older guy who called him out for streaming on a train. It’s not the only time something like this has happened with foreign influencers, and honestly, it’s really damaging their reputation here. It’s just one of those incidents that’s really soured things for a lot of people.
