Ubisoft Doubles Down On Open-World And Live-Service Games

In their latest financial report, Ubisoft outlined the types of games they plan to prioritize moving forward. These categories encompass open-world action-adventure games as well as projects involving the service model (games delivered continuously over the internet).

In a recent earnings discussion, Ubisoft’s Frederick Duguet mentioned that the company has been pouring substantial resources into a vast array of projects in their primary product categories – open-world action adventure and games-as-a-service. He emphasized that this is what they aim to consistently provide going forward.

It’s no secret that Ubisoft often concentrates on developing large open-world games and live-service titles. This strategy, however, isn’t as new as it once was for the company. In the past, Ubisoft offered a wider variety of games across various genres and formats. Unfortunately, not all of their live-service initiatives have been successful. For instance, they launched and subsequently closed games like XDefiant and Hyper Scape fairly quickly. Skull & Bones, the pirate game, is still in operation but hasn’t quite managed to achieve blockbuster status yet.

Duguet proceeded to mention several forthcoming titles from Ubisoft that have already been announced, such as Assassin’s Creed Shadows, continued enhancements for Rainbow Six Siege, Anno 1803: Pax Romana, and The Division Resurgence. He noted that additional information about other upcoming games would be disclosed around May, a time when Ubisoft typically shares its financial report for the next quarter. This is also the period when numerous game companies start revealing gaming news in preparation for the summer season, following various exhibitions and events.

Regarding what Ubisoft has planned ahead – they haven’t shared much detail about their upcoming titles yet – Duguet stated that they have a robust lineup ready for the coming years. This is consistent with how executives typically speak when addressing analysts about their company’s future prospects, painting a hopeful and vigorous picture.

According to Ubisoft, the upcoming game “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” is set for release this March, and they predict that preorder numbers will match those of “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.” It’s worth noting that “Assassin’s Creed Odyssey” was one of the most successful installments in the entire Assassin’s Creed series, although Ubisoft didn’t specify the exact measurement used for this comparison.

In other updates, Ubisoft is currently implementing cost-cutting measures which include job cuts and studio shutdowns, as stated by CEO Yves Guillemot. He described these actions as tough but crucial. Furthermore, Ubisoft is undergoing a thorough evaluation with the aim of restructuring its operations, and one possibility could be a partnership with Tencent. Regarding discussions about the company’s future, Guillemot expressed confidence that there are multiple viable strategies to attain their goals.
