In approximately a month, Ubisoft will be launching the action RPG titled Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the latest installment in the Assassin’s Creed series. This new game takes players to feudal Japan during the “late Sengoku period,” where they’ll journey through a breathtaking new setting and unravel the interconnected tales of protagonists Naoe and Yasuke.
Prior to the game’s launch across multiple platforms, Ubisoft shared a Developer Post that outlined updates to the parkour system. These modifications, as explained by Associate Director Simon Lemay-Comtois, are designed to elevate the parkour experience. Key elements of these upgrades involve the introduction of fresh animations, the ability to move while prone, and a physics-driven grappling hook. Additionally, tweaks to existing mechanics were also addressed in the post.
One of the recent enhancements to the parkour system in the game involves adjusting the control layout. Previously, the crouch and dodge buttons were placed differently. However, in this updated version, known as Shadows, dodging has been combined with parkour down mechanics, enabling a variety of new parkour moves. This modification also separates stance changes (like standing, crouching, or prone) from parkour, allowing players to use any stance without accidentally transitioning to a lower position on a rooftop when they don’t intend to.

Later on, Lemay-Comtois outlined the fundamental parkour techniques for Shadows, known as “parkour up button maneuvers.” Pressing and holding this button while moving enables either Naoe or Yasuke to ascend to the highest or farthest point, whether by running, jumping, or leaping from one platform or beam to another. It’s worth mentioning that each character has unique parkour styles, so players should keep these differences in mind when devising strategies for various situations.
If pressing the “parkour up” button causes players to ascend to the highest points, using the “dodge” or “parkour down” button initiates a recovery roll, ensuring a secure landing from significant heights for Naoe. For Yasuke, this same button is used for a parkour down traversal, allowing for smoother descents during heavier drops. This results in quieter movements, aiding in a stealthy playstyle.
In a similar fashion, pressing and holding the “descend from ledge button” when close to a ledge without moving in any direction will let your character hang onto the ledge in a climbing position. However, if you input a directional command near the ledge, they can perform numerous acrobatic moves for a more flamboyant descent style, often referred to as “showy parkour.
The post mentioned earlier explained modifications in the way sprinting works, such as executing a sprint dodge like Naoe when pressing the dodge button during sprint, resulting in an extended dive-roll to overcome any hindrances. Moreover, Naoe and Yasuke have exclusive moves called Automated Passovers, which enable Naoe to leap over smaller obstacles without needing additional inputs, while Yasuke can push through breakable objects using a shoulder bash.
Apart from the listed modifications, these characters can shift between postures even when running at full speed. Transitioning to a crouching position will cause them to execute a sliding knee maneuver back to a crouched stance. Similarly, they can dive while running if they adopt a prone position, but keep in mind that sprinting might make them automatically stand up from “crouch and prone positions.
The Grappling Hook will gain from these recent enhancements that focus on boosting vertical climbing, hook swings during use, and wall running when attached to a ledge. Additionally, there are advancements in parkour moves such as directional dodging while maintaining a stance, executing a wall run escape during a climb, performing a backward dodge upon pressing the “parkour down” button, and modifications for surfaces considered impossible to scale.
