With the 50th season of Survivor premiering in just a month, it seems like two players are facing long odds. Despite being surrounded by returning winners and fan favorites, the focus isn’t on them—it’s on Savannah and Rizo from last season. They’re determined to learn from the mistakes made during the Heroes Vs Villains season and avoid a similar fate.
Many fans consider Heroes vs. Villains to be the best season of Survivor ever. A key part of what made it so memorable was Russell Hantz, a player who had secretly competed in the previous season and was therefore a complete surprise to everyone. His extremely assertive and strategic game took the other players by surprise, and he dominated his way to the final round. Several cast members later admitted they would have voted him out right away if they’d known how he played before.
Many viewers have now seen Savannah and Rizo play on Survivor 49, so we have a good understanding of their strategies and personalities. However, the other players on Survivor 50 didn’t have that same advantage, as their season was filmed before 49 aired. Now that exit interviews from Survivor 50 are being released, it’s no surprise that many of the returning players admit they were intimidated by Savannah and Rizo, as they didn’t know what to expect.
In this brief clip posted by Survivor’s official Instagram account, a handful of the players were asked who they consider the biggest threats. The most common answer by a longshot was Rizo and Savannah.
Dee, Angelina, and Ozzy expressed concern about the 49 players, noting they don’t have much information about them. They described these players as unpredictable and unknown quantities. Cirie explained her hesitation to team up with them even more directly…
I’d rather the devil I know versus the devil I don’t know.
Christian pointed out that the most threatening players on returning seasons are often those who seem the most unassuming. Basically, people without an immediate, obvious reason to be voted out tend to last longer in the game. Savannah and Rizo are in a tough spot because they do have clear reasons to be targeted: they’ve watched everyone else play, but no one has seen their seasons. This creates a power imbalance that will likely make them stand out and become targets.
This will also create difficulties for past winners. Dee and Kyle clearly stand out from the other players, and everyone knows they’re capable of winning, which will likely change how people interact with them. Savannah, as a relatively unknown winner, presents an even bigger challenge, though she hasn’t decided if she’ll reveal her victory or try to keep it a secret. She originally intended to play the game in a completely different way, so it will be interesting to see how she adjusts her strategy.
As a huge Survivor fan, I’m incredibly excited about the new season – probably more so than ever before. While I have some concerns about the cast and the season’s format, I’m choosing to focus on the positives. This cast is amazing, and with the possibility that we might not see returning players like Cirie, Colby, and Coach again – especially Coach, who’s already creating a buzz – I’m determined to fully enjoy the season.
