The free release of the game The Leviathan’s Fantasy, including the Giants and Gods expansion, sparked some debate and led the developers to address concerns from people who were speculating about its origins.
It’s unusual, but not unheard of, for games to be given away for free on Steam. Currently, Steam users have another opportunity to add a game to their library without spending any money.
The Chinese studio StarChess recently caused a stir with their game, The Leviathan’s Fantasy. When they offered the game for free, there was an initial issue: the game still showed the original price on Steam. Players had to either add the game to their wishlist or use SteamDB to see that it was actually free.
The problem is now resolved thanks to help from Valve. The developer is also processing refunds for anyone who purchased *The Leviathan’s Fantasy* after the sale began on September 1st.

Two months for a free “purchase”
Beyond the technical side of things, there’s a more compelling reason to pay attention. Many games are offered for free for a limited time, typically just a few days. Right now, that includes *Cybarian: The Time Travelling Warrior*, which you can add to your Steam library before September 23rd.
Good news! *The Leviathan’s Fantasy* will be available to play for free throughout the entire month of October. This free access only applies to the main game, not any downloadable content. However, the DLC isn’t required to enjoy the game – you can simply skip selecting any add-ons when you begin.
Some players were wary of the initial announcement about a two-month free trial of *The Leviathan’s Fantasy*, so the StarChess team followed up with another announcement. In it, the developers responded to speculation and clarified their reasoning behind the offer.
Just wanted to clear things up! We offered the free promotion mainly to make sure everyone who already bought the game keeps getting all the new updates and improvements. There’s really no secret reason behind it, and it’s definitely not some kind of scheme. We just want new players to discover how awesome the game is, and we want to keep supporting all of us who already love it!
As mentioned before, the game launched on Steam again to help fund ongoing updates and improvements to *TLF*. The original game, *Celestial City Fantasy*, is available for purchase.
Initially, the developers offered a free version of the game by giving out keys directly to players, but this process was quite slow and frustrating for many. The main issue was that some players were reselling these keys on other websites. The developers are still working on a way to prevent users from obtaining more copies of the game than intended.
Hence, the decision of the studio to make the title completely free for 2 months.
