Twitch streamer voicing Overwatch’s Anran demands devs redesign “Ozempic Chic” hero

Fareeha Andersen, a Twitch streamer and the voice actor for the new Overwatch character Anran, is asking Blizzard to change the character’s design, arguing it reinforces unrealistic beauty expectations.

Fareeha responded to criticism about her character’s look in a video, explaining the changes fans noticed between her current in-game design and previous animated versions.

Anran was revealed during a recent Overwatch event, along with the heroes Jetpack Cat, Emre, Domina, and Mizuki.

This damage-dealing character, who uses fire, was first shown in an animated trailer featuring her younger brother, Wuyang, a support hero released last year. Players have noticed, though, that her design in the game is much thinner and more traditionally styled compared to how she looked in the trailer.

A popular social media post jokingly claimed someone had undergone a long list of cosmetic procedures, including a nose job, eyelid surgery, jaw shaving, Botox, cheek fillers, facial bone surgery, gastric bypass, a facelift, lip fillers, and buccal fat removal.

This list includes a variety of cosmetic and surgical procedures, such as rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), eyelid surgery, chin reduction, Botox injections, cheek and lip fillers, facial bone contouring, weight loss surgery (gastric bypass), and facelifts. Buccal fat removal is also included, which slims the cheeks.

The comparison sparked a lot of discussion online, and some players felt Blizzard had made Anran’s appearance less unique.

Anran voice actor says she “mourned” the final design

In a video responding to the debate, Andersen acknowledged she was hesitant to speak out, but she largely agreed with the points being made against her.

She explained she wanted to acknowledge the obvious problem, but also avoid upsetting the developers. She described it as a delicate balance – wanting to support the community while still being understanding of the developers’ work.

It was tough for me, as a fan, to see Anran’s story unfold. I really wished things had gone a different way with her character design – I had a specific vision in my head, and it was a little sad to see how things actually turned out. It felt like mourning a lost potential, you know?

I’m thrilled to announce I voice Anran in Overwatch! I waited to share this news because I wanted to give a proper response, and here it is! Let’s all support the potential she has, and I hope you enjoy playing as her! 🔥🪭

She explained that Anran’s previous designs for the character, both in comics and animated shorts, led people to believe Overwatch would promote a more diverse view of beauty, pushing back against current trends like the extremely thin and heavily sculpted look often seen in media – a trend she called “Ozempic chic.”

According to Andersen, the final look sends a different message.

Honestly, this new direction for the character just doesn’t feel right. It’s not the kind of big, hopeful vibe Overwatch usually goes for, and it totally clashes with who she is as a character. It just doesn’t fit her personality at all.

She noted that Anran seems gentler now, even though she’s designed to be a strong, fire-based hero. She even likened Anran to her brother, who focuses on support and maintaining peace.

Andersen said she would continue to “champion the version of her that we all wish for.”

Changing Anran reportedly on Overwatch devs’ radar

The comments quickly split the community.

Some players wanted Blizzard to bring back Anran’s original appearance, but others liked the current design and felt the criticism was excessive.

Some people criticized Fareeha for overstepping her boundaries as a voice actor and advocating for changes to the character, while others supported her and asked her to help them achieve their goals.

In any case, the developers are seemingly aware of the demand for an edit.

Twitch streamer Warn, after talking with the game’s developers, shared that changes to the hero Anran are being considered. He did warn, though, that completely changing a hero’s design is a big task and would likely take several months to complete, even if they decide to move forward with it.

This discussion also follows previous statements from the Overwatch team hinting that characters considered traditionally attractive are simpler to create skins for. This is because their faces tend to be more symmetrical and have smoother lines, making cosmetic designs easier to develop.
