Following an assault on Twitch streamer Emiru at a TwitchCon meet-and-greet last week, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy has issued an apology and admitted that multiple security failures contributed to the incident.
Twitch quickly released a statement about the attack, but Emiru publicly disagreed with how the company described what happened. Additionally, people have criticized Dan Clancy for suggesting in an interview with Taylor Lorenz that creators are responsible for managing their viewers and preventing such incidents.
Clancy has publicly apologized to Emiru on Twitch’s X account for the recent incident, taking full responsibility. In a statement, Clancy admitted the situation “shouldn’t have happened” and acknowledged that both the incident itself and the response to it were mishandled. Clancy specifically apologized for poor communication, including their own comments, and expressed remorse for everything that occurred.
Twitch announced it will thoroughly investigate the recent incident with Emiru, along with other concerns raised following TwitchCon 2025. These concerns include how in-person (IRL) streams were managed at the event and making sure the event is accessible to everyone.
We understand you’re placing a lot of faith in us by coming to TwitchCon, and we’re committed to keeping you safe. Our recent statement about this has received varied responses, with some people noting that Twitch has made similar pledges about security improvements at past events. Many have also pointed out that the announcement was made late on a Friday afternoon, a time when companies often share unwelcome news hoping it will quickly be overlooked.
Emiru has announced she won’t be going to TwitchCon anymore and is advising other content creators to think carefully about whether they should attend.
