Twitch CEO Dan Clancy says he’s not particularly worried about the upcoming congressional hearing focused on how online platforms can contribute to radicalization.
In September 2025, Congressman James Comer, who chairs the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, requested that the CEOs of Twitch, Reddit, Discord, and Steam appear before Congress to testify at a hearing.
The hearing, originally planned for October 8th, was delayed because of the US government shutdown. A new date hasn’t been announced yet.
I just read the statement from the Committee, and it sounds like they’re holding a hearing to look into how people get radicalized on online forums. They’re specifically focusing on cases where people are openly encouraging others to commit politically motivated acts – basically, when online discussions turn into calls for violence or illegal actions. It’s pretty concerning stuff, and I’m glad they’re taking it seriously.

Chairman Comer stated the investigation began following public response to the murder of political commentator Charlie Kirk. He emphasized that Congress is responsible for monitoring social media platforms that extremist groups use to promote political violence.
To stop the spread of extremism and violence, the heads of Discord, Steam, Twitch, and Reddit need to testify before the Oversight Committee and detail how they’ll prevent their platforms from being used for harmful activities, he added.
Twitch CEO says platform likely won’t face issues before Congress
At TwitchCon 2025, journalist Taylor Lorenz interviewed Twitch CEO Dan Clancy, questioning him about an upcoming hearing and whether he worried about the possibility of extremist views spreading on the platform.
Clancy stated he didn’t think the shooting involving Charlie Kirk had anything to do with Twitch itself. He explained that the connection was simply because many Twitch users also happen to use other platforms like Reddit, Discord, and Steam.
Honestly, I’m not too concerned about radicalization on Twitch. The way I see it, because it’s so public, it’s just not the same as what you see on other platforms. There aren’t those hidden, private groups where things can really take root, you know? It’s an open forum, and that makes a big difference, at least to me.
Looking at this objectively, it seems like these people are just trying to learn about Twitch. They likely aren’t familiar with the platform since they don’t use it themselves.
I’m confident that when people start to analyze this situation, they’ll realize that Twitch is different from everything else.
Dan Clancy, a representative from Twitch, doesn’t believe a potential congressional hearing is a major concern and argues that Twitch doesn’t have an issue with radicalization. He feels that lawmakers will ultimately recognize this. This information was shared by journalist Taylor Lorenz.

Clancy’s comments have sparked varied responses online, especially after the issues at TwitchCon 2025. The event was marked by several problems, including an assault on streamer Emiru by a fan, security removing gifts intended for VTubers, and streamers’ computers being infected with malware, which required them to reset all their passwords.
During the same interview with Lorenz, Clancy addressed the situation with Emiru, saying he was worried about her. However, he also made comments about her fans that many viewers found offensive and led to criticism.
Twitch has faced criticism in the past regarding the content it hosts. Earlier this year, streamer Hasan Piker received a one-day ban after making a statement about politician Rick Scott that he later said was an exaggeration. The comment involved calling for harm to Scott and sparked controversy.
