As a huge fan of horror and comics, I’m really excited about what’s happening right now! It looks like some passionate fans are taking it upon themselves to reimagine two of the most beloved episodes from that fantastic Netflix horror series. They’re funding these projects themselves, which is awesome, and I can’t wait to see their takes on those stories.
I’m so excited! Neil Gibson, the creator behind Twisted Comics, is finally releasing the Black Mirror graphic novels! Both of these projects started as Kickstarter campaigns, and fans of the show really came through, completely funding them and even exceeding the goals. Now they’re finished, and each one offers a fresh take on a different episode of Black Mirror. I can’t wait to check them out!
The first project shares the same title, “USS Callister.” The original episode is heavily inspired by Star Trek and unfolds entirely within a virtual reality video game played by multiple users. Starring Jesse Plemons, with Cristin Milioti, Michaela Coel, and Jimmi Simpson in supporting roles, it quickly became a fan favorite. Notably, “USS Callister” is the only Black Mirror episode to receive a sequel, “USS Callister: Into Infinity,” which premiered in the show’s seventh season in 2025.
As a huge fan of the Black Mirror episode “USS Callister,” I was thrilled to hear it’s been adapted into a graphic novel! Neil Gibson wrote the story, and the art by Silvano Beltramo is really cool – he uses a playful, classic style for the virtual reality world, reminiscent of Jack Kirby, and then switches to a more modern, realistic look for everything happening in real life. Agnese Pozza handled the colors, and Rob Jones did the lettering. Plus, Billy Butcher created a fantastic cover! The project was fan-funded through a Kickstarter campaign by Twisted Comics, and you can still grab a copy – and even some bonus content packages – on their Kickstarter page.
This graphic novel, the second from Twisted Comics based on the Netflix series Black Mirror, builds upon the popular episode “San Junipero.” Creator Gibson explains on the Kickstarter page that he was drawn to adapting this particular episode because of its hopeful tone, a departure from the generally darker themes of Black Mirror. The project is fully funded and nearing completion, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
Will There Be More Black Mirror Adaptations?
Each episode of Black Mirror tells a unique story with the potential to become a much larger tale. The popularity of fan-created graphic novels, such as those based on USS Callister and San Junipero, demonstrates that audiences are eager for more expanded versions of these episodes. While there’s no current announcement about adapting other episodes into graphic novels, the success of the first two suggests that Twisted Comics might continue exploring the world of Black Mirror.
I really think some Black Mirror episodes would look amazing as comics! Especially after how well Twisted Comics did with “USS Callister,” I’d love to see them tackle “USS Callister: Into Infinity,” the sequel from Season 7. And “Beyond the Sea,” with Aaron Paul, was just so visually striking – it practically begs to be a comic book! Sadly, we haven’t heard anything official yet, and it seems like Twisted Comics is focused on finishing the San Junipero adaptation first, so we might have to wait a bit.
There are plenty of stories that could be turned into new episodes. While fans wait, they can also explore Twisted Comics’ original content on their website, including their ongoing series, Twisted Dark, which shares a similar feel to Black Mirror, along with other unique creations.
You can watch the show Black Mirror on Netflix. And now, you can also read Black Mirror: USS Callister, a comic book based on the show, from Twisted Comics.
