TV Thrillers You Can Binge in One Night

People tend to consume entertainment in one of two ways: some prefer to focus on things that require sustained attention, while others enjoy quickly diving into and finishing gripping TV series all at once. Both approaches are fine, especially now that so many things are competing for our time and money. Older TV shows used to have very long seasons, but now shows are generally shorter. It’s easier to watch several shorter episodes than to commit to a long movie.

As a thriller fan, I’m spoiled for choice these days with all the streaming options. It’s amazing how many gripping shows you can devour in just a few hours! Some have become huge hits, even getting extended beyond their original ‘limited series’ plans. And honestly, there are still so many fantastic, under-the-radar thrillers out there that deserve way more attention. If you’re craving a seriously intense TV binge you can finish in one night, I’ve rounded up eight recommendations that are guaranteed to get your pulse racing – trust me, you won’t be able to look away!

‘Cruel Summer’

Many people missed out on the show Cruel Summer, possibly because it originally aired on Freeform and later became available on Hulu. It’s an anthology series that, unfortunately, only lasted two seasons, despite having a great concept and potential for more. The first season is particularly good. It centers around Jeanette Turner (Chiara Aurelia), an awkward teenager, and the transformation she undergoes after the popular Kate Wallis (Olivia Holt) vanishes. Each episode revisits the same day over three years – 1993, 1994, and 1995 – showing how Kate and Jeanette swap social positions in the wake of Kate’s disappearance.

The first season of Cruel Summer is a real standout – it’s full of twists and turns that will keep you hooked, and the performances, especially from Aurelia and Holt, are surprisingly excellent. The show also has those moments that are uncomfortably good – you won’t be able to look away! Sadly, the second season didn’t measure up, and the show was ultimately cancelled. However, if you’re looking for a gripping show to watch in one sitting and don’t want to invest in a long series, definitely check out Season 1 before exploring other options.

‘Citadel’

Prime Video

Looking for an exciting spy series? Check out Citadel on Prime Video. It’s surprisingly overlooked, especially considering it was made by the Russo brothers (known for their Marvel work) and features stars Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The show centers on Mason Kane and Nadia Sinh, top agents whose memories are erased when their organization, Citadel, is taken down. Years later, a former coworker, Stanley Tucci, finds them, and they get a chance to remember who they are and stop a dangerous group trying to take over the world.

With just six episodes, the first season of Citadel is a fast-paced show you can easily watch in one sitting. The connection between stars Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas is a major highlight, and the intense action makes it a gripping thriller. Ignore the negative feedback – Citadel has already been renewed for a second season and is expanding with two spin-offs, Citadel: Diana and Citadel: Honey Bunny. Shows that aren’t well-made rarely get this kind of support, and the addition of acclaimed actress Lesley Manville is another reason to give this series a try.

‘Stay Close’

Netflix

Harlan Coben’s books are famous for becoming addictive thrillers on streaming services, and Stay Close is no different. This eight-part series centers on Megan (Cush Jumbo), a mother whose seemingly perfect life starts to unravel when a secret from her past resurfaces. As with all of Coben’s stories, Megan’s path intersects with several other characters, including a detective (James Nesbitt), a photographer (Richard Armitage), a club owner (Sarah Parish), and a truly unsettling pair of hitmen (Poppy Gilbert and Hyoie O’Grady). These villains are particularly creepy, and the fact that they’re called Barbie and Ken makes them even more disturbing.

Harlan Coben’s Stay Close is a standout thriller packed with unexpected twists. It’s more engaging than some of his recent work, featuring compelling characters that keep you hooked throughout all eight episodes. The high stakes create real tension, and the story culminates in a rewarding conclusion. Prepare to be disturbed – and to remember certain scenes long after you finish watching!

5
‘Behind Her Eyes’

Netflix’s Behind Her Eyes is a surprisingly good show that, like the first season of Cruel Summer, hasn’t gotten enough attention. While it shares Citadel‘s fate of receiving some negative reviews, many of those criticisms likely stem from a reluctance to embrace truly original storytelling. Behind Her Eyes is both incredibly inventive and genuinely scary. The story follows Louise, a single mother, who starts an affair with her boss, David. When David’s wife, Adele, suspects infidelity, a chain of disturbing events unfolds, leading to what many consider to be one of the most shocking endings in television history – and that’s not an overstatement.

The Netflix series Behind Her Eyes starts slowly, but with only six episodes, it quickly becomes captivating. The key to enjoying it is to stick with it, even if things get strange or confusing. If you let go of your need for everything to make sense and simply follow the story, the finale will be truly shocking. Be warned, though – the ending is unforgettable and might stay with you for a long time. If it does, starting a new show can be a good way to take your mind off things.

4
‘Clickbait’

Netflix

Netflix’s thriller series Clickbait, featuring Adrien Grenier, Zoe Kazan, and Betty Gabriel, is a gripping watch that’s sure to raise your heart rate. The eight-episode show dives into the dangerous world of social media, focusing on the harmful effects of online deception and false information. When Nick Brewer (Grenier) is kidnapped, a video surfaces claiming he’s abusive – and that he’ll be killed if the video gets five million views. This shocking development forces his family to desperately search for him and discover the truth about the man they thought they knew.

“Clickbait” is scary not just for its story, but because it feels incredibly real. Unlike shows like “Citadel” and “Behind Her Eyes,” the events in this series could actually happen to anyone, making it particularly disturbing. Beyond being a captivating binge-watch, it offers a chilling commentary on online relationships and makes you question how well you truly know the people you interact with. It’s both a gripping story and a thought-provoking exploration of a terrifying possibility: realizing you don’t really know those closest to you.

3
‘The Undoing’

HBO Max

Wow, The Undoing really lives up to its name! As a fan, I was completely hooked by this psychological thriller. Nicole Kidman is, as always, captivating, and Hugh Grant is incredible – seriously, you’d never guess this was the same guy known for rom-coms! He plays Jonathan Fraser, and his performance is so different, it’s amazing (except maybe for his role in Heretic). The story follows Grace, Kidman’s character, whose world is turned upside down when a terrible murder happens and Jonathan just vanishes. It reminded me a bit of Clickbait, leaving you constantly questioning everything and wondering if you really know the person you think you do.

As a total movie and TV buff, let me tell you, The Undoing is a wild ride! Seriously, it’ll have you guessing until the very last second, and because it’s only six episodes, you’ll want to binge it ASAP to find out who’s telling the truth. I especially appreciated how realistically it depicted New York City – the contrast between wealth and those struggling to get by felt really authentic. Plus, it’s one of Donald Sutherland’s last roles, and he’s fantastic, alongside Lily Rabe and a really promising young actor, Noah Jupe. The ending is genuinely shocking, but once you see it, it all clicks – no wonder it was HBO Max’s biggest hit of 2020!

2
‘Paradise’

Topping many ‘must-watch’ lists, Paradise is a thrilling show that expertly builds suspense. The story follows Xavier Collins, a Secret Service agent played by Sterling K. Brown, whose perfect life is shattered when the President (James Marsden) is found dead. And that’s just the beginning! Once the truth about ‘Paradise’ is revealed, you’ll be completely hooked. If you enjoyed This is Us, you already know that anything with Sterling K. Brown is worth watching, and James Marsden delivers a standout performance as Cal Bradford.

Similar to another top thriller on this list, Paradise features a chilling performance by Julianne Nicholson. This eight-episode series starts as a conspiracy thriller but quickly evolves into a complex drama where you’ll constantly question who to trust. While you’ll likely have answers by the end of the first season (available on Hulu), Paradise has already been renewed for seasons two and three, proving it’s a gripping and worthwhile watch, even with a few minor plot issues.

1
‘Mare of Easttown’

HBO

If you’re looking for a truly gripping show, look no further than Mare of Easttown. While the incredible Kate Winslet definitely elevates the series, it’s more than just her performance. The show paints such a realistic picture of life in a small Pennsylvania town that the unsettling events feel incredibly real. Winslet plays Mare, a detective investigating a young girl’s murder, all while dealing with her own personal struggles with family and depression. This makes her a complex character who is surprisingly easy to connect with. Winslet’s moving and honest performance earned her numerous awards, including an Emmy, Golden Globe, and Critics Choice Award. But the show’s strengths don’t stop with her – Mare of Easttown has a lot more to offer.

This seven-part drama builds to a shocking finale, and the personal struggles of the main character are just as captivating as the murder mystery itself. The show’s attention to detail – from the realistic accents to the authentic setting – creates a truly immersive world, making you wish it wasn’t just a limited series. Kate Winslet has hinted that a second season might film in 2027, giving you time to enjoy or revisit the first season and catch up on other great shows in the meantime!
