Troy Baker Says AI Revolution “Is A Good Thing,” But Not For The Reason You Might Think

Voice actor Troy Baker, known for his work in many video games, sees the rise of AI as a positive development. He thinks it will actually encourage people to value and seek out genuine, artist-created work, rather than content produced by AI.

In a conversation with The Game Business, Baker explained that AI is undoubtedly capable of creating content that surpasses human work, and can do so very quickly. However, Baker emphasized that this AI-generated material should be considered content, not true art.

According to Baker, while AI can generate content, it can’t truly create art. This is because genuine art always needs the influence of human experience.

A core idea about creating art seems to be getting lost. It’s that art needs artists. People are amazed by what AI can produce, but that’s not the point. We don’t need to put AI down or be afraid of it, we simply need to acknowledge that it exists as a tool.

Baker believes AI poses a threat to businesses, but could ultimately be helpful for artists.

Baker believes the rise of AI will actually lead people to seek out genuine, real-world experiences. As AI becomes more prevalent, people will increasingly crave things like live music, theater, and reading books – direct experiences that feel more meaningful than what’s delivered through screens and technology. He sees this as a positive development, even a revolution.

The use of artificial intelligence in video game development, particularly AI-generated voices, has sparked considerable debate, as highlighted by the recent SAG-AFTRA strike which focused on protecting actors’ rights in the face of this technology. Even with some player concerns, several game developers are still incorporating AI into their workflows. For example, Embark Studios, known for the game Arc Raiders, is utilizing AI to create voices for non-playable characters (NPCs).

Several actors, including Matthew McConaughey and Michael Caine, have agreed to let artificial intelligence replicate their voices. Even after James Earl Jones, the voice of Darth Vader, passed away in 2024, an AI version of his voice showed up in the game Fortnite last year. This made news when players found ways to make the AI say inappropriate and offensive language.

SAG-AFTRA member Troy Baker recently earned praise for his performance as Indiana Jones in the video game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Even Harrison Ford, the original Indiana Jones actor, complimented Baker’s work, stating that it was excellent and achieved without the use of artificial intelligence.
