The box office is getting competitive with the release of Tron: Ares, along with several other new movies. The sci-fi sequel is expected to open strongly, and films like Roofman and Kiss of the Spider Woman are also vying for viewers with different types of stories.
Tron: Ares box office could open with $50 million
I’m really excited for Tron: Ares! Early reports from Variety say it’s expected to open with around $45 to $50 million domestically. It’s directed by Joachim Rønning and the story is about the first time humans encounter beings made of artificial intelligence – apparently, a program from the digital world actually comes into our reality. They’re predicting another $40 to $45 million internationally, which could bring the total opening weekend to as much as $95 million worldwide! I can’t wait to see how it does.
Early box office predictions for the new Tron film are similar to those of Tron: Legacy from 2010, which opened with $44 million. The Tron story started in 1982 with the original film, which earned $50 million globally on a $17 million budget. With a reported production cost of $180 million, ‘Tron: Ares’ is now the most expensive film in the series. While critics are divided – it currently has a 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 97 reviews – early indicators suggest audiences are more interested than expected.
Jared Leto stars as Ares in the new film, alongside Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson. Jeff Bridges returns as his character Kevin Flynn from previous ‘Tron’ movies like ‘Tron: Legacy’. The music is composed by Nine Inch Nails and will be released by Interscope Records.
This weekend, Paramount is releasing the new film *Roofman*, starring Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst, and they anticipate it will earn between $8 million and $12 million in its opening weekend. Meanwhile, *Kiss of the Spider Woman*, with Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna, is expected to open with $1.5 million to $3 million.
Tron: Ares will be released in theaters on October 10, 2025, over forty years after the first Tron movie came out in 1982.
