Jared Leto’s new movie, Tron: Ares, isn’t doing well in theaters. Recent reports suggest it might earn even less money than his 2022 film Morbius. The sci-fi sequel is having trouble attracting viewers, which is worrying for both the film’s success and the future of the Tron series.
Tron: Ares’ worldwide box office haul could fall short of Morbius’ collection
Jared Leto’s new movie, Tron: Ares, isn’t performing well in theaters worldwide. It’s expected to earn less overall than his previous film, the 2022 superhero movie Morbius.
The movie Tron: Ares has made around $69 million in the United States and $66 million internationally, for a worldwide total of about $135.4 million. However, the film’s earnings dropped significantly in its fourth weekend, bringing in just $2.8 million from overseas markets.
The latest Tron movie is projected to earn around $150 million worldwide, which is less than the total earned by the film Morbius ($167.4 million). Considering it cost roughly $220 million to make, this movie is shaping up to be one of Disney’s biggest financial disappointments of the year.
Tron: Ares, which premiered globally on October 10th, tells the story of a digital program named Ares who finds himself in the human world. The film is directed by Joachim Rønning and stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, and Jeff Bridges.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar+, director Joachim Rønning explained the choice to bring back the classic villain Sark in the movie. He said they intentionally included the quick cameo as a way to tease possible storylines for the future. As Rønning put it, “We brought Sark back, even if it’s just at the end, to hint at what might happen next.”
With low returns for Tron: Ares at the box office, the franchise now faces an uncertain future.
