Indonesian director Razka Robby Ertanto’s movie “Midnight in Bali” is set to debut on the world stage at the Harbour section of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, offering a multi-layered tale about identity and change. A sneak peek of the film has been revealed through its trailer.
This movie focuses on Bulan, a transgender woman who performs at clubs in Bali and has her own complex history. She’s involved in a complicated romance with a troubled police officer. However, things take an unexpected twist when she offers refuge to Mira, a neighbor escaping an abusive relationship. Mira becomes intrigued by Bulan’s LGBTQ+ community and suggests collaborating on a film project together.
The narrative of the project combines Bulan’s current life situation with her backstory – fleeing a religious family, pursuing a man named Bram to Bali, but finding him missing upon arrival. Her subsequent exploration of the city’s seedy underworld, which eventually uncovers Bram working in the adult entertainment industry, serves as inspiration for Mira’s movie. However, when her past traumas and present experiences intersect, this results in unforeseen consequences.
The film production by Summerland Films is overseen by Ertanto and Friska Wulandari. Ertanto’s previous works, such as “Ave Maryam” (2018) and “Cross the Line” (2022), delved into aspects of Christian faith and migrant workers respectively. His latest creation, “Yohanna” (2024), which explores the intersection of child labor and the church, debuted at Rotterdam and garnered significant recognition, winning several awards at the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival’s Indonesian Screen Awards in 2024.
Ertanto describes Bali as a fascinating blend of rapid modernization and traditional values, embodying our internal conflicts,” he says. “In ‘Midnight in Bali,’ Ertanto weaves the storyline against Indonesia’s globally renowned yet culturally grounded island. As a director, he feels compelled to address this matter of representation, which is consistently intertwined with our pursuit for social equality.
The movie boasts a diverse lineup of talented actors such as Juan Bio One, Tatjana Saphira, Luna Maya, Carissa Perussete, and Donny Damara.
The International Film Festival Rotterdam’s Harbor area is recognized for presenting daring films that tackle modern societal concerns. This event runs from January 30th to February 9th.
