Denzel Washington won an Academy Award for his role as Detective Alonzo Harris in the 2001 film Training Day. Now, 25 years later, viewers don’t have much time left to stream the popular crime thriller on Netflix.
The film Training Day will no longer be available on Netflix after January 1, 2026. Starring Denzel Washington as a narcotics officer with the LAPD and Ethan Hawke as Officer Jake Hoyt, the movie follows their intense 24-hour shift navigating the challenging neighborhoods of Los Angeles, including Westlake, Echo Park, and South Central. Ethan Hawke received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the film.
I still remember being blown away by the cast Antoine Fuqua assembled for Training Day! Beyond Denzel Washington, you had Eva Mendes, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Macy Gray, Tom Berenger, and even Scott Glenn – seriously impressive! And it did really well at the box office, making around $105 million on a $45 million budget. It was a hit, and deservedly so.
Unlike roles audiences were used to seeing him in, this movie allowed the actor to play a different kind of character. He portrays Jake Hoyt, who quickly discovers his mentor isn’t who he thought he was. Throughout the film, Washington’s character, Alonzo Harris, uses questionable tactics when dealing with criminals, challenging Hoyt’s beliefs and pushing him to his limits.
The popular movie Training Day led to a television series with the same name, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, in 2017. Unfortunately, the show was canceled after its first season. The TV series starred Bill Paxton, Julie Benz, and Justin Cornwell.
Denzel Washington’s Equalizer Franchise is Not Finished Yet
Denzel Washington is planning to star in two more Equalizer movies, continuing the popular film series. He recently told Esquire that he enjoys making these films because audiences want to see him play a hero who takes down villains. He explained that fans often tell him, ‘We can’t handle these bad guys ourselves, so you do it!’ and he happily accepts the challenge.
Denzel Washington most recently played Robert McCall in The Equalizer 3 in 2023. Similar to Training Day, these Equalizer films were directed by Antoine Fuqua. In a recent interview with Esquire, Washington mentioned he has several projects planned for the next few years, including continuing the Equalizer series. He confirmed they are working on both Equalizer 4 and Equalizer 5, adding that fans are excited about the continuation of the popular films.
If you enjoy Denzel Washington’s action films like The Equalizer, you can currently watch Training Day on Netflix, but it will no longer be available after January 1, 2026.
