Tracker Season 3 Has Already Fixed Season 2’s Gina Picket Mistake

After only two episodes, season 3 of Tracker has begun a storyline that’s already more compelling and potentially impactful than the main mystery of season 2. The Gina Picket cold case from last season was ultimately disappointing. While it seemed intended to deepen Colter Shaw’s character, the story didn’t really connect with viewers. The show spent too much time telling us why we should be invested in the case, instead of showing us something that would make us care.

The Gina Picket storyline didn’t really justify the amount of attention it received. It was a tragic, but straightforward case of a serial killer’s victim, and ultimately felt unsatisfying. Thankfully, the larger story arc developing in Tracker season 3 is much more compelling and doesn’t feel as contrived.

The third season of Tracker began with a two-episode premiere that introduced a mysterious organization called The Process. The new season immediately felt more grounded and realistic than season two, which focused on serial killers and cults. This conspiracy storyline has a lot of potential and feels genuinely compelling.

The story’s central idea naturally lends itself to surprising twists and turns. More importantly, it feels incredibly timely, reflecting our current concerns about powerful tech companies, privacy breaches, and the misuse of personal data being sold for profit.

We’re fascinated by serial killers and true crime, but they’re actually quite rare and most people can’t connect with that world. “The Process” is an extreme story, but it feels believable because algorithms already have a huge influence on our daily lives and choices.

Despite Colter and Russell believing they defeated The Process at the end of Tracker season 3, episode 2, it’s clear things aren’t that simple. A hacker group capable of creating such a sophisticated algorithm wouldn’t leave it easily disabled by simply destroying some computers. They would have built in safety measures and backup systems.

Also, Jillian, who could be the third member of The Process, is currently missing, so this storyline will probably reappear later this season. When it does, it could affect the Shaw brothers in a significant and unexpected way.

Tracker Season 3‘s Overarching Mystery Can Tie Back To Ashton Shaw’s Murder

Given how The Process works, it’s likely connected to Ashton Shaw’s death. The season 2 finale of Tracker showed Otto Waldron was the one who pushed Ashton off the cliff, acting on a request from Mary Shaw. The latest episode of season 3 revealed that Colter and Russell believe Ashton was struggling with his mental health, and that a specific event that summer deeply affected him.

All evidence suggests Ashton became involved in a risky situation while teaching at Berkeley. He was recruited by the government for a highly classified project and likely died because of it. While this project, which has been running for about a decade, doesn’t seem to be directly related to ‘The Process,’ it’s possible the algorithm later connected to whatever the government was working on in 1992, causing Ashton Shaw to go into hiding with his family.

Schneider, leading the investigation, questioned Colter about his family, wondering if anyone might be keeping secrets. The reality is, everyone has something to hide. These family secrets have profoundly impacted Colter and his siblings’ lives. Now, in season 3 of Tracker, the show can finally link the current storyline to past events, resolving long-standing questions while simultaneously drawing Colter—and hopefully Russell—into a more complex and intriguing mystery.
